In the author s group, much lower-melting benzenesulfonate, tosylate, or octyl-sulfate ionic liquids have recently been obtained in combination with imidazolium ions. These systems have been successfully applied as catalyst media for the biphasic, Rh-catalyzed hydroformylation of 1-octene [14]. The catalyst activities obtained with these systems were in all cases equal to or even higher than those found with the commonly used [BMIM][PF6]. We have studied the effect of monomer concentration in the dispersion polymerization of styrene carried out in alcohol-water mixtures as the dispersion media. Several radical copolymerizations of vinyl 2-furoate with well-known monomers (50 50) were also studied. Complete inhibition was obtained with vinyl acetate, very strong retardation with styrene, vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile methyl methacrylate homopolymerized without appreciable decrease in rate. Since 1 is a monomer with low activity, copolymers 2 obtained at any stage of the copolymerization process, irrespective of the monomer ratio in the initial mixture, always contain a smaller amount of monomeric units of 1 than that in the corresponding monomer mixture. 1 being prone to enter the chain-transfer reaction, the increase of its content in the initial monomer mixture reduces substantially the reaction rate and decreases the molecular mass of the copolymers. Such copolymers can be obtained with a AN 1 ratio in the initial mixture between 95 5 and 85 15.
