Spring-loaded valves

Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) A relief valve is a spring-loaded valve actuated by static pressure upstream of the valve. The valve opens normally in proportion to the pressure increase over opening pressure. A relief valve is normally used with incompressible fluids. [Pg.164]

Balanced relief valves are spring-loaded valves that contain a bellows arrangement to keep back-pressure from affecting the set point. Figure 13-4 shows a cross section of a balanced relief valve, and Figure 13-5 is a schematic that shows how the valve operates. The bonnet is vented to atmosphere and a bellows is installed so that the back-pressure acts both downward and upward on the same area of the disc. Thus, the forces created by the back-pressure always cancel and do not affect the set point. [Pg.363]

Testing of pressure relieving spring loaded valves at atmospheric temperature requires an adjustment in set pressure at ambient conditions to compensate for higher operating temperatures. For process services see Table 7-UV and for saturated steam, use Table 7-1B. [Pg.426]

Safety valves are spring-loaded valves of various designs, typically with a steam huddling chamber feature that increases the total force of the steam, thereby causing the valve to pop up (pop-type SV) rather than rise slowly in response to increased pressure. Pressure relief valves play an important role in LNG piping systems. Any section of LNG piping that can trap LNG must have a pressure relief valve to prevent failure of that section of pipe should all the LNG vaporize. These pressure relief valves are similar to those used on LNG storage tanks. Spring-loaded valves that reseat following a reduction in pressure are preferred to those that do not and vent all the LNG in that line. Pressure relief valves should be protected from water accumulation to prevent freezing in the open position since the LNG vapor that is released will likely be very cold. [Pg.118]

As a general rule, they should not be used in steam, air, gas or vapour applications or in the presence of variable backpressure. Nevertheless, there are high-performance small spring-loaded valves which are designed specifically for specific services on gas, with backpressure or under cryogenic conditions. [Pg.111]

Dirty service with particles in the fluid A spring-loaded valve, preferably with elastomer soft seat is preferred (preferably no PTFE). An elastomer soft seat greatly limits seat damage. PTFE is hard and easily scratched and not good for particle-laden fluids. If a pilot-operated valve is preferred or necessary for the application, the pilot should be protected from the particles. There are different options and configurations to protect pilot valves nowadays, but the option depends on the dirtiness of the fluid. This should be discussed in detail with the SRV vendor (also see Section 5.3.3.4). [Pg.225]

Therefore, as seen earlier, to avoid this highly hazardous situation, a balanced bellows spring-loaded valve must be used. This type includes a bellows assembly as described in Sections 5.2 and they subtract the disc of the valve from the influence of the backpressure so that the valve opens at the correct predetermined pressure (Figure 11.4). [Pg.265]

At first, a water suspension of pulp has to go through a mechanical treatment that consists of a spring-loaded valve assembly (refiner), where the slurry is pumped at high pressure. Advances in sealing technology and reductions in friction/stiction may continue to be made to reduce accumulation and blowdown.
