A schematic of the apparatus developed is shown in Fig. 3. Stirrers mix and push the lighter and heavier phases in each compartment, with the maximum rotation speed governed by the need to maintain the interface steady. Flow deflectors ensure that the phases are circulated in each chamber and that flow near the interface is laminar. The interfacial plate (thickness 2 mm) is rectangular with a hole at its center. The distance from the interface to the flow deflectors is less than 6 mm. The two phases are analyzed by withdrawing small volumes via sampling holes. [Pg.336]

A fundamental principle of science is that simpler models are more useful than complex ones—as long as they explain the data. You can certainly appreciate the usefulness of the kinetic-molecular theory. With simple postulates, it explains the behavior of the ideal gases in terms of particles acting like infinitesimal billiard balls, moving at speeds governed by the absolute temperature, and experiencing only perfectly elastic collisions. [Pg.165]

Control systems used for the speed governing of gas turbines have become highly involved in electronic circuitry. Electromechanical fuel value control has largely replaced methods based on hydraulic control. The reliability of electronic and electrical devices has improved to such a level that they are generally preferred to hydraulic and mechanical devices, where their use is appropriate. [Pg.54]

D21.7 Because the drift speed governs the rate at which charge is transported, we might expect the conductivity to decrea.se with increasing solution viscasity and ion size. Experiments confirm these predictions for bulky ions, but not for small ions. For example, the molar conductivities of the alkali metal ions increase... [Pg.413]

Suitable guardrails and barriers should be erected at entrances and exits from buildings and at blind corners at the end of racking in warehouses. Particular care must be taken in areas where lorries are being loaded or unloaded. It is important that separate doorways are provided for pedestrians and vehicles and all such doorways should be provided with a vision panel and an indication of the safe clearance height, if used by vehicles. Finally, the enforcement of a sensible speed limit, coupled where practicable, with speed governing devices, is another effective control measure. [Pg.175]

This paper is organized in five sections. The first one presents the introduction and objective. In section 2 is presented the proposed method for knowledge acquisition. Section 3 presents the comparison between the methods presented by different authors cited in the bibliography and the proposed method. The application of method is carried out in the speed governing system of a Francis turbine, as shown in the section 4. Finally, section 5 presents the conclusions and reconunen-dations for future work. [Pg.826]

The system to be analyzed is the speed governing system of Francis turbine (schematically presented in Fig. 4) installed in a hydroelectric power plant localized in Sao Paulo state in Brazil. The hydroelectric power plant has a generation capacity of 120 MW. [Pg.829]
