The aim of this Appendix is to summarise some of the commonly used safety criteria that may be useful in evaluating the safety of a system. This chapter must be read with an understanding of the contents of Chapters 4 and 5. It is for the safety assessor (with regulatory authority concurrence) to select the optimum criteria (or combination of criteria) from applicable regulations to apply to the specific system level (see Fig. 8.1) under consideration. By using a local ventilation system of good design less air is needed to reach a specific contaminant level than is possible with general ventilation. It can also be said that the purpose of local ventilation is to achieve a more efficient (defined in some way) ventilation in a part of a room or in the wdiole room. The expression of the models in different modes of representation occurred during the whole process and, as has been previously commented upon, exerted an essential role in the development of students knowledge. This was particularly relevant for those students who could understand the relevance of the choice of a given code and level of representation in order to better express the mental model previously produced. Respiratory Effects. One study suggested increased respiratory disorders (asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia) in children with chronic exposure to a solvent-contaminated water supply (Byers et al. 1988). Two municipal wells in eastern Woburn, Massachusetts, were found to contain several solvents including trichloroethylene (267 ppb) and tetrachloroethylene (21 ppb). The increased susceptibility to infection may be secondary to effects on the immune system. Accurate chemical-specific exposure levels for individuals could not be determined because the water distribution system was designed to use water from different wells at different rates and times. In the practical world, results not only need to be reproducible but also transferable. This requirement helps assure that differences in apparatus for the purpose of automation do not interfere with the method and demands a validation to demonstrate equivalency.
