Soluble matter

ISO 787 specifies two methods of determination of matter soluble in water. The Part 3 gives the hot extraction method. The material is boiled in water for 5 min, cooled to room temperature. Altered, extract is evaporated, and soluble matter determined gravimetrically. In Part 8, the cold extraction method is specified. Extraction is done at room temperature for 1 h. The next steps are the same as in hot extraction method. 

The ASTM method is the same as hot extraction method in ISO procedure.  

Details of several different methods for determining the specific surface area of carbon black are described in ASTM D 3037. The different types of equipment used and procedures are included in separate sections. Another standard gives full details of procedure of conventional Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) method based on multilayer gas adsorption. The results of determination are in both cases given in the surface area in square meters per gram of substance.

Sand that is used in filtration must be free of clay, dust, and other impurities. The ratio of lime, lime-stone, and magnesium oxide will have to be lower than 5 weight percent. The standard guide value of the quality of fresh sand is to be below 2% soluble matter at 20 °C within 24 hours in hydrochloric acid of a 20 weight percent concentration. 

Initially, upon start-up of an adsorption unit, a slight increase in the effluent water s pH is observed. This is attributed to trace leaching of the soluble matter from the matrix of the activated carbon. 

Adsorption efficiency can be optimized by using finer particle size products which will improve the diffusion rate to the surface of the activated carbon. However, there is a tradeoff in using finer particles with pressure drop and, hence energy use. Note that during start-up of an activated carbon filter bed, a bed expansion of 25 to 35 % is recommended in order to remove soluble matter and to stratify particles in order to ensure that the MTZ is maintained when future backwashing is performed.

Recovery of valuable products from penicillin, riboflavin, streptomycin, and vitamin B12 fermentation has been recommended as a viable waste control strategy when incorporated into animal feeds or supplements. Penicillin wastes, when recovered for animal feed, are reported to contain valuable growth factors, mycelium, and likewise evaporated spray-dried soluble matter [31,32,34]. 

A case-cohort study of aluminum production plant workers showed a clear excess of lung cancer risk in men who had worked in Soder-berg potrooms in jobs with high exposure to CTPV, and that the risk was not due to confounding by smoking. The rate ratio for lung cancer rose with cumulative exposure to CTPV measured as benzene-soluble material to 2.25 at 10-19 mg/m -years benzene-soluble matter but did not rise with further exposure.

Amount of Moisture in Woods.—A remarkable variation is observed at stated seasons, in the quantity of soluble matter—sap—which is present in all kinds of woods thus, in spring, when the tree is in active growth, the amount of water, et cetera, is much greater than at the close of autnmn, or the middle of winter, when it is in a kind of normal state. The practical benefit of this knowledge is, that trees, whether intended for fuel or timber, are, or should be, felled in the latter seasons although, when they are cultivated for the principle of the sap, such as tannin, quinin, et cetera, it is more advantageous to ent them when the flow is at its full. 

The reduction of weight of farmyard manure depends on two causes, namely, the elimination of gases by fermentation, and the loss of soluble matters by drainage. The latter, the least feared, is by far the most serious source of loss. The former has been shown by Voeiker to be not bo destructive as was formerly supposed.

Likewise the solubility of nitrocellulose in ether-alcohol solution is improved by prolonged heating of the substance, accompanied by a reduction in the nitrogen content. Data from Lacape [55] show that nitrocellulose of 13.03% N and 7.0% of soluble matter, after being maintained at 108.5°C for 50 hr, has a nitrogen content of 12.65% and a solubility of 52.7%. On the other hand, nitrocellulose of 11.73% N, 98% soluble after being heated for 35 hr at 108.5°C was found to have a nitrogen content of 11.11% and its solubility fell to 92.7%.
