Solid polyamide resins coatings

Ambient-cure systems are often based on lower molecular-weight solid epoxy resins cured with aliphatic polyamines or polyamides. Curing normally occurs at ambient temperatures with a working life (pot life) of 8—24 h, depending on the formulation. Epoxy—polyamine systems are typically used for maintenance coatings in oil refineries, petrochemical plants, and in many marine applications. Such coverings are applied by spray or brush. These are used widely where water immersion is encountered, particularly in marine applications (see COATINGS, MARINE).

The epoxy-polyamide system may also provide a base for paper and board coatings applied by rotogravure or roller-coating techniques. It is useful for coating plastics and particularly valuable as a resin system for zinc-rich paints. It may be formulated with exempt solvents specified under Rule 66 (37). Higher solid formulations, particularly those formulated with fatty amido amines, are available. These formulations reduce solvent pollution and allow for higher film builds (37, 38). 

Floors ana walls of structures are obvious areas where epoxy systems may be utilized to prevent deterioration from abrasion and chemical attack. Such systems are now to be found in original specifications. VTall surfaces may be coated viith epoxy systems based on solid resins dissolved in solvents and hardened with polyamines and/or polyamides. Porous surfaces, such as concrete blocks, are first prepared viith fillers to provide a smooth surface for application of coatings. 

One can rationalize a need for small rubber inclusions in some of the newer approaches to waterborne and high solids epoxy coating systems. Water-thinned epoxy coating compositions are described (48) where the two-component system consists of a nitrile rubber modified epoxy resin in the epoxide component and a styrene/ butadiene/methylmethacrylate latex modifier for an emulsion-based polyamide hardener component. Showing improved adhesion, impact and water resistance, the paint has good wetting characteristics and can be formulated to a high solids content at low viscosity.

Designed for epoxy resin systems, Anquamine 401 and Ancamide 2424 (by Air Products) are a modified aliphatic curing agent at 70% solids in water for waterborne two-component epoxy coatings and a modified polyamide curing agent for liquid epoxy resins in two-component structural adhesives. 

Polymeric crown ether resins are mechanically unstable and are, therefore, operated with low flow rates between 0.05 and 0.1 mL/min resulting in long analysis times. Typical for all polymeric crown ether phases is the relatively low chromatographic efficiency, which does not meet today s requirements. However, this problem can be overcome by immobilizing crown ether polymers on the surface of a solid support. Modified and non-modified silica are predominantly used as support materials. Igawa et al., for instance, coated silica particles with the above-mentioned polyamide crown ether resin and obtained significantly better separations then with the rmcoated resin.
