Solid oxide fuel cell issues

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are composed of ceramic components and the mechanical reliability of these components is a significant issue in the development of SOFCs. In particular, the durability of the components against stresses during operation is a serious problem. To evaluate the mechanical reliability of SOFCs, the magnitude of the stresses in cell components and the strength of the components against the stresses must be considered precisely. Stresses in SOFCs are categorized into fom types. [Pg.324]

The steam electrolysis at high temperature (600-800°C) features a potential efficiency of -100% LHV with extra heat available. Its technology benefits from current developments made of solid oxide fuel cells. However, many uncertainties and issues remain to achieve a commercial viability. Prominent issues include improving the reliability and the lifetime of electrolytic cells and stack of cells and decreasing the investment and operating costs with a view to decreasing the currently estimated production cost from 4 to about EUR 2/kg H2 [from 5.2 to about USD 2.6/kg H2],... [Pg.29]

In many oxidation reactions, the conversion and selectivity from a fuel cell operation tend to compromise each other. At a high selectivity, the conversion is often low and vice versa. Another important issue related to solid oxide fuel cells is that heat from many exothermic partial oxidation reactions docs not provide sufficient energy to justify the process. The resultant power density is usually low. The above two issues can be... [Pg.357]
