The Advanced Environmental Services, Inc. (AESI), soil reclamation facility, American SoU Processing, in Marion, Iowa, includes on-site soil storage capacity and soU processing equipment. The Cedarapids soU remediation system (manufactured by Ratheon Company) used by AESI to treat contaminated soils by low-temperature thermal desorption is similar to that used by another vendor. Table 6.2 shows the total metal content in the surface soil layer, in relation to the distance from the smelter, and based on our own work and on other data. Relatively low Cu and Pb concentrations measured close to emission sources probably resulted from the deep ploughing undertaken as a first step of soil reclamation. In this way, the heavy metals previously accumulated in the surface layer were "diluted" in the top-soil. It is not definitely known whether such treatment would, or would not, cause any changes in metal mobility. 

There are various natural and synthetic materials used for soil reclamation. They are added to the soil surface or around the seedling roots at the time of planting, thereby improving the soil s physical properties [21]. 

Better understanding of these mechanisms and those that regulate transfer to the plant is needed so that they can be exploited in land reclamation and soil...

Another application or example of phytoremediation is phytostabilization by reforestation, such as the reclamation of metalliferous mine wastes. Phytostabilization is the stabilization of contaminants in surface soils (especially in root zones) by preventing them from leaching down profiles or entering surface runoff. The additional benefits of reforestation in reclamation include supplying local timber needs, the provision of employment in rural areas, the enhancement of the surrounding scenery, the establishment of perimeter wind breaks and shelter belts, the provision of food and shelter for wildlife, and the reduction of surface water and resulting erosion (Williamson and Johnson, 1981). 

The element molybdenum (Mo) is found in all living organisms and is considered to be an essential or beneficial micronutrient. However, molybdenum poisoning of ruminants has been reported in at least 15 states and 8 foreign countries. Molybdenum is used primarily in the manufacture of steel alloys. Its residues tend to be elevated in plants and soils near molybdenum mining and reclamation sites, fossil-fuel power plants, and molybdenum disposal areas. Concentrations of molybdenum are usually lower in fish and wildlife than in terrestrial macrophytes.

Power ultrasound can be used for the rehabilitation of industrial sites or the reclamation of polluted land by the removal of chemical and biological contamination from soil. There are two basic mechanisms through which this can occur either via the removal of contaminated material from the surface of soil particles or the leaching out of more deeply entrenched materials.
