Software: computer engineering computing

One ideally suited software for engineering and numerical computations is MATL AET-7 1. This acronym stands for Matrix Laboratory . Rs operating units and principle are vectors and matrices. By their very nature, matrices express linear maps. And in all modern and practical numerical computations, the methods and algorithms generally rely on some form of linear approximation for nonlinear problems, equations, and phenomena. Nowadays all numerical computations are therefore carried out in linear, or in matrix and vector form. Thus MATLAB fits our task perfectly in the modern sense. [Pg.11]

Vehicular accident reconstructionists typically come from one of two backgrounds criminal justice or engineering. While the educational paths are different for these two fields, the specialized field of vehicular accident reconstruction has basic principles and methods and requires proficiency in the studies of mathematics, physics, forensic investigation, photography, computer-aided design software, mechanical engineering, and human anatomy and physiology. [Pg.1903]

With so-called one-chip processors, modern semiconductor technology offers an inexpensive module which can perform all the functions of the central processor of a process computer. As a result, many new fields of application for computer-based solutions are being opened up, and the end of this development is not in sight. Hence the introduction of microprocessors into the control of cement manufacturing plant obviously suggests itself, and has indeed been successfully accomplished for certain special purposes. It should be borne in mind, however, that with the use of a process computer in a cement works rather less than 10% of the capital cost is spent on the central processor, as against more than 50% on software and engineering. The actual cost of a microprocessor is therefore only to a very limited extent determined merely by the hardware cost. Even so, the microprocessor is assured of a future in cement works, but more particularly as a powerful component unit of process control systems. [Pg.711]

Most previous surveys have concentrated either on software engineering [9] or on Human-Computer Interaction practice [13, 16, 27], but rarely have they examined the relationship between the two. For a variety of appHcations such as computer-aided engineering systems, software development, or hypermedia, the relational database model is insufficient. In an RDBMS, it is difficult to model complex objects and environments the various extensive tables become complicated, the integrity is problematic to observe, and the performance of the system is reduced. This led to two sophisticated object-based models, the object-oriented and the object-relational model, which are mentioned only briefly here. For further details see Refs. [10] and [11]. [Pg.236]

In order to balance public domain science with a high quality commercial software product it has been necessary for us to reimplement almost every aspect of computational chemistry embodied in HyperChem. All HyperChem source code is written in C or C-t-t, specified, designed, and implemented by Hyper-Chem s developers. We have stood on the scientific shoulders of giants, but we have not used their FORTRAN code Thus, although we have had access to MOPAC and other public domain codes for testing and other purposes, HyperChem computes MINDO, MNDO, and AMI wave functions, for example, with HyperChem code, not MOPAC code. We have made the effort to implement modern chemical science in a modern software-engineered product. [Pg.158]
