Michelspacher s title-page is not, in fact, a monument to empirical learning, but takes the form of a memento mori. Far from applauding the new Renaissance humanism, on the contrary, he employs the science of anatomy as a metaphor to demonstrate the futility of rational knowledge in the face of death and decay. The prospect of immortality is available only to those who seek an intuitive Gnosis, a divine epiphany concerning God s work in Nature. [Pg.86]

A variety of species of laboratory animal are employed to study aerosol deposition for both efficacy and toxicity. It is important to recognize that the breathing parameters [17], not to mention the anatomy [18], of these animals differ substantially from humans. Table 3 shows a range of breathing parameters for several species of laboratory animal. Clearly there is a matter of scale involved in that small animals cannot generate the same airflow volumes as humans and to some extent compensate by increasing their respiratory rate. [Pg.485]

There are many similarities and differences in the anatomy and physiology of mammals, birds, and humans. It is outside the scope of this chapter to elaborate on the individual differences. For a brief review, refer to the third edition of Modern Pharmaceutics [9] and the second edition of Development and Formulation of Veterinary Dosage Forms [10]. [Pg.723]

Maybe. "Convinced of immortality, the sages of antiquity viewed the human body not as the man, but the house of the man. This book draws on material gathered from dozens of sources written over the centuries. The thought-provoking essays in this book show how the human body reveals the laws and principles operating throughout the universe. The 18 chapters are illustrated with plates from rare and early works on Rosicrucianism, the Hermetic sciences, the cabala, and more traditional texts on anatomy and physiology"... [Pg.503]

The multimedia model present in the 2 FUN tool was developed based on an extensive comparison and evaluation of some of the previously discussed multimedia models, such as CalTOX, Simplebox, XtraFOOD, etc. The multimedia model comprises several environmental modules, i.e. air, fresh water, soil/ground water, several crops and animal (cow and milk). It is used to simulate chemical distribution in the environmental modules, taking into account the manifold links between them. The PBPK models were developed to simulate the body burden of toxic chemicals throughout the entire human lifespan, integrating the evolution of the physiology and anatomy from childhood to advanced age. That model is based on a detailed description of the body anatomy and includes a substantial number of tissue compartments to enable detailed analysis of toxicokinetics for diverse chemicals that induce multiple effects in different target tissues. The key input parameters used in both models were given in the form of probability density function (PDF) to allow for the exhaustive probabilistic analysis and sensitivity analysis in terms of simulation outcomes [71]. [Pg.64]

Neurotransmitters and neuropeptides have been implicated in fear and anxiety. Much of our knowledge of the human neural substrates of fear and anxiety is derived from pioneering work using cat and rodent models. As techniques have advanced, our understanding of the anatomy, neurochemistry and physiology of these responses has progressed. In particular, the development of functional imaging techniques has allowed us to confirm that observations made in a number of animal species may also apply to humans. [Pg.901]
