The pursuit of further miniaturization of electronic circuits has made submicrometer resolution Hthography a cmcial element in future computer engineering. LB films have long been considered potential candidates for resist appHcations, because conventional spin-coated photoresist materials have large pinhole densities and variations of thickness. In contrast, LB films are two-dimensional, layered, crystalline soHds that provide high control of film thickness and are impermeable to plasma down to a thickness of 40 nm (46). The electron beam polymerization of CO-tricosenoic acid monolayers has been mentioned. Another monomeric amphiphile used in an attempt to develop electron-beam-resist materials is a-octadecylacryUc acid (8). 

The use of the computer in the design of chemical processes requires a framework for depiction and computation completely different from that of traditional CAD/CAM appHcations. Eor this reason, most practitioners use computer-aided process design to designate those approaches that are used to model the performance of individual unit operations, to compute heat and material balances, and to perform thermodynamic and transport analyses. Typical process simulators have, at their core, techniques for the management of massive arrays of data, computational engines to solve sparse matrices, and unit-operation-specific computational subroutines. 

The introductory chapter of this book identified four basic motivations for studying CA. The subsequent chapters have discussed a wide variety of CA models predicated on the first three of these four motivations namely, using CA as... (1) as powerful computational engines, (2) as discrete dynamical system simulators, and (3) as conceptual vehicles for studying general pattern formation and complexity. However, we have not yet presented any concrete examples of CA models predicated on the fourth-and arguably the deepest-motivation for studying CA as fundamental models of nature. A discussion of this fourth class of CA models is taken up in earnest in this chapter, whose narrative is woven around a search for an answer to the beisic speculative question, Is nature, at its core, a CA "...

The application of the reverse Euler method of solution to a system of coupled differential equations yields a system of coupled algebraic equations that can be solved by the method of Gaussian elimination and back substitution. In this chapter I demonstrated the solution of simultaneous algebraic equations by means of this method and showed how the solution of algebraic equations can be used to solve the related differential equations. In the process, I presented subroutine GAUSS, the computational engine of all of the programs discussed in the chapters that follow.
