Soft Peel

Awareness of this problem led to the rapid development of new TCA peel formulas between 1990 and 2000. One of the first solutions put forward was the New Peel combination of TCA and Mikuda complex. The soft Peel formulation used asiaticosides and ginsenoids, glycerol, urea (carbamide), sorbitan monolaurate and methyldibromo-glutaronitrile, among other ingredients. Easy TCA , Unideep and Only Touch Peel (OTP) provided another answer to the problem these stabilized solutions consist of a base solution to which a determined quantity of 50% m/m TCA is added. There are no complicated calculations to be performed, the directions for use state precisely what volume of 50% m/m TCA solution should be added to the base solution to make up the Easy TCA , Unideep and OTP solutions, which provide peels to the basal layer, the papillary dermis and the reticular dermis, respectively. [Pg.82]

The total number of soft peels required was 5-10, with an interval of 8-21 days in between, depending on the depth reached by each peel. Attempts to stabihze TCA solutions by adding glycerol ( soft peehng ) or propylene glycol improved the safety of TCA peels, although they did not necessarily make them completely stable. Moreover, the addition of glycerol or its derivatives was stiU empirical and varied from one doctor to another - more of a do-it-yourself approach than a professional one. It is difficult to compare the different solutions, since the exact concentrations of these adjuvants were neither uniform nor even known for certain. There are many temporary protectives on the market and it would be impracticable to describe them individually. However, they may be classified according to the type of film formed, i.e. soft film, hard film and oil film the soft film may be further sub-divided into solvent-deposited thin film, hot-dip thick film, smearing and slushing types. Pectin is a long chain of pectic acid and pectinic acid molecules. Because these acids are sugars, pectin is categorized as a polysaccharide. It is prepared from citrus peels and the remains of apples after they are squeezed for juice. In the plant, pectin is the material that joins the plant cells together. When fungus enzymes break down the pectin in fruit, the fruit gets soft and mushy. [Pg.142]

Baker et al. (2002) reported that nearly three-quarters of the fresh fruits and vegetables (F V) consumed most frequently by children in the USA contain residues. In general, soft-skinned fruit and vegetables tend to contain residues more frequently than foods with thicker skins, shells or peels. Moved] Cranberry fruit of Early Black cultivar was fractionated chromatographically and fractions were analyzed for flavonoid content. The effects of the flavonoid fractions and ursolic acid, an abundant triterpenoid in cranberry peel, were assessed in two models of colon cancer and one model of breast cancer. Clonogenic soft agar assays were used to determine the effect of these compounds on tumor colony formation in HCT-116, HT-29 and MCF-7 cells. MTT and trypan blue assays were performed to assess their ability to inhibit tumor cell proliferation. TUNEL assays were performed to assess apop-totic response to the cranberry compounds. The proanthocyanidins inhibited tumor colony formation in HCT-116 and HT-29 cells in a dose-dependent manner, with greater effect on the HCT-116 cell line. Ursolic acid strongly inhibited tumor colony formation in both colon cell lines. These compounds also decreased proliferation in all three tumor cell lines with the HCT-116 cell line most strongly affected. (150 words)... [Pg.285]

Most concentrated beverages contain fruit juice or whole fruit , a term that refers to a comminuted form of citius that includes components of juice, essential oil, peel (flavedo) and pith (albedo). Concentrated soft drinks are usually flash-pasteurised and chemically preserved. Their dilutable form means that they are often held in partially filled bottles for significant lengths of time (often many weeks or even months) and are extremely vulnerable to spoilage by micro-organisms. [Pg.5]

The only sources of NSP in soft drinks are fruit materials, gums and stabilisers such as sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and pectins. Of these items, only fruit juices are used in significant quantities.
