Furthermore, there is a series of reprints of original papers that in some cases originated well before 1985. They are usually unedited, often with the original pagination. Nevertheless, the Variorum series, in particular, provides a useful way to access and store such material. A collection by Allen Debus relates mainly to chemistry in its early phases40 and is a highly authoritative introduction to such matters. Debus has also recently edited a collection of classic articles on alchemy and early chemistry reprinted from Ambix, the Journal of the Society for the History of Alchemy and Chemistry.41 Another volume in the Variorum series relates to a later period and... [Pg.5]

This contribution is derived from Strategy and System Reppe and the Development of Organic Chemicals in I.G. Farben, a paper presented at a meeting of the Society for the History of Technology, Madison, Wisconsin, 3 November 1991. Subsequently it has been reworked and presented at various seminars. It is based largely on my doctoral thesis, The Development of Acetylene Chemistry and Synthetic Rubber by I.G. Farbenindustrie Aktiengesellschaft, 1926-1945, Oxford University D.Phil., 1982. [Pg.89]

Nielsen, Anita Kildebsek received her Ph.D. degree from the University of Aarhus in 2000 with a thesis analysing the social and institutional networks of Danish chemists in the early twentieth century. She was assistant professor in Aarhus from 2001 until 2004 and subsequently held a postdoctoral position at the University of Copenhagen until 2006. She currently works as head of administration at the Technical University of Denmark. Anita is vice chairman of the Danish Society for the History of Chemistry, Denmark s representative in the Federation of European Chemical Societies Working Party on History of Chemistry, and is on the editorial boards of the history journal 1066 and of the journal of the Danish Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, BioZoom. She has specialized in the history of chemistry, biochemistry and medicine in Denmark in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and her publications include essays on Danish Nobel Laureates and chapters in Dansk Naturvidenskabs Historic, 2005-2006. [Pg.354]

A considerable number of journals deal with the history of science and medicine, but only one (Ambix, published by the Society for the History of Alchemy and Chemistry) is devoted specifically to the history of chemistry. Articles of historical interest frequently appear in journals such as Chemistry in Britain Journal of Chemical Education and Education in Chemistry. Historical articles also appear occasionally in more general journals such as Scientific American and New Scientist, as well as in specialised journals concerned with particular subdivisions of chemistry. An excellent guide to the literature published in the period from approximately 1960 to 1980 is to be found in C. A. Russell (ed.), Recent Developments in the History of Chemistry (London, 1985). Anyone wishing to explore an aspect of the history of chemistry in greater depth would be well advised to start with that publication. [Pg.271]

Georgette Taylor earned a Ph.D. in 2006 on the chemical affinity theories of the eighteenth century and explored the teaching of chemistry, in particular by William Cullen and Joseph Black and by many of their ex-students. She won the 2008 Partington Prize awarded by the Society for the History of Alchemy and Chemistry for Tracing Influence in Small Steps Richard Kirwan s Quantified Affinity Theory . This publication is a supplement of the journal Technology and Culture of the Society for the History of Technology. The paper edition ended in 2002. Since then, it is published only in electronic format as part of the History of Science, Technology and Medicine database. It is divided into 17 subject classifications for each of the 5 defined historical time periods. It provides extensive coverage in all formats of the literature on the history of technology. [Pg.322]

McNeil, I., ed. 1996. An Encyclopaedia of the History of Technology. London Routledge. Edited by a former executive secretary of the Newcomen Society for the History of Engineering, this one-volume encyclopedia is a compilation of articles written by selected members of the history of engineering community. Divided into 22 chapters, this work covers the history of technology from its earliest time to the present. It is an excellent introduction to a very complex and fascinating area. At the end of each chapter is listed other publications for further reading. [Pg.326]

In 1920, the first learned society devoted to the history of engineering and technology, the Newcomen Society, was founded in London. In the United States, the Society for the History of Technology was created in 1956. Both of these societies have had a very positive impact on the development of the field of the history of engineering. Many other societies that traditionally have been studying... [Pg.337]
