Soaking

Depilation. — Depilation is accompKshed in several ways (i) by sweat ng (2) by the use of lime (3) by the use of alkaline sulphides (4) by the use of arsenic sulphide. The first process results in a special fermentation, to which we shall return in a moment. Depilation with lime, or barking, appears to be based on the combined action of enzymes and the caustic used. As to the third and fourth processes, they are purely chemical, and, for this reason we shall speak no further of them. [Pg.638]

In practice, one or the other of these two processes is utilized. Depilationvdlh is especially utilized for large cattle hides [Pg.639]


Normally acid would be allowed to soak for some time and then back-produced if possible along with the impairing products. One of the advantages of using coiled tubing is that it can be inserted against well head pressure so the well does not have to be killed a potentially damaging activity. [Pg.355]

Steam is injected into a reservoir to reduce oil viscosity and make it flow more easily. This technique is used in reservoirs containing high viscosity crudes where conventional methods only yield very low recoveries. Steam can be injected in a cyclic process in which the same well is used for injection and production, and the steam is allowed to soak prior to back production (sometimes known as Huff and Puff). Alternatively steam is injected to create a steam flood, sweeping oil from injectors to producers much as in a conventional waterflood. In such cases it is still found beneficial to increase the residence (or relaxation) time of the steam to heat treat a greater volume of reservoir. [Pg.357]

These systems have been operated in extremely low quality (and radioactivity contaminated) industrial environments for the past several years without any major equipment or component failures. Utilizing specialized operating/warm-up procedures, they have operated in low grade, out-of-doors, dust ridden, rain-soaked, industrial environments at temperature ranges which greatly exceed the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) specified limits. The systems have been successfully operated at ambient temperatures of minus 10 to plus 103 degrees Fahrenheit without any pre-mature or un-anticipated equipment failures. [Pg.612]

This reaction is a useful test for a sulphite or for moist sulphur dioxide, which turns dichromate paper (filter paper soaked in potassium dichromate) from yellow to green. [Pg.292]

It is best now to proceed as in the Skraup Synthesis (p. 297) and warm the mixture over an asbestos-covered gauze with a Bunsen flame until the reaction starts, and have at hand a duster soaked in cold water so that when the reaction starts, the heating can be at once removed and the duster wrapped round the shoulders of the flask to aid condensation. [Pg.301]

CAUTION. Bromine must be handled with great care and in the fume cupboard. The liquid produces painful bums and the vapour is unpleasant. One example of a liquid-based ion-selective electrode is that for Ca +, which uses a porous plastic membrane saturated with di-(n-decyl) phosphate (Figure 11.13). Pepper, White. This spice is derived from the same plant as black pepper except that the berries are allowed to ripen fully. The dark outer hulls are removed by mbbing and washing after soaking and fermentation. White pepper has generally the same flavor and aroma as black pepper however, it is milder and has a slight fecal odor. [Pg.29]

Precautions in Handling. Ammonium bifluoride, like all soluble fluorides, is toxic if taken internally. Hydrofluoric acid bums may occur if the material comes in contact with moist skin. Ammonium bifluoride solutions should be thoroughly washed from the skin with mildly alkaline soap as soon as possible however, if contact has been prolonged, the affected areas should be soaked with 0.13% solution of Zephiran chloride, or 0.2% Hyamine 1622 (Lonza, Inc.) or calcium gluconate, the treatment recommended for hydrofluoric acid bums. If any of these solutions come in contact with the eyes, they should be washed with water for at least 10 min and a physician should be consulted. [Pg.148]

Electrical Properties. Polytetrafluoroethylene is an excellent electrical insulator because of its mechanical strength and chemical and thermal stabihty as well as excellent electrical properties (Table 6). It does not absorb water and volume resistivity remains unchanged even after prolonged soaking. The dielectric constant remains constant at 2.1 for a temperature range of —40 to 250°C and a frequency range of 5 Hz to 10 GHz. [Pg.352]
