Class 3. -MucK resembling real cubchs, bill OiiLwardly shrivelled, with longer otid broflder tail than oC real cuhi hs. [Pg.112]

Nutrient solutions used in intravenous feeding must be isotonic with blood that is, they must have the same osmotic pressure as blood. If the solution is too dilute, its osmotic pressure will be less than that of the fluids inside blood cells in that case, water will flow into the cell until it bursts. Conversely, if the nutrient solution has too high a concentration of solutes, water will flow out of the cell until it shrivels and dies. [Pg.273]

FIGURE 8.32 (a) Red blood cells need to be in a solution of the correct solute concentration if they are to function properly, (bl When the solution is very dilute, too much water passes into them and they burst, (c) When the solution is too concentrated, water flows out of them and they shrivel up. [Pg.456]

Both the flowers and the cucumber contain solutions (plant sap), but both of these solutions are less concentrated than the salt solution. Thus, the solution in the plant material moves across the semipermeable membrane in an attempt to dilute the salt solution, leaving behind wilted flowers and shriveled pickles (less water in their tissues). [Pg.304]

Kernels damaged by trichothecene contamination can be removed by the use of gravity separators reducing inoculum and humidity in storage. Separation of shriveled kernels and washing of grain have been reported as eliminating up to 74% of deoxynivalenol. [Pg.227]

Symptoms A very common fungal problem that produces soft, brown patches on fruit Concentric circles of white fluffy growth also develop on these areas while fruit is on the tree or in storage. Fruit may turn black. Some fruit on the tree will shrivel, become mummified, and remain attached throughout the winter. [Pg.323]

Symptoms Larvae feed on developing fruit, causing segments of the berry to become shriveled and hardened. [Pg.336]

Symptoms Leaves may develop dark brown lesions in early summer. In late summer, purplish blotches appear on stems around buds, turning brown-black to silver in winter. Diseased canes become dotted with tiny black fungal fruiting bodies. Plants rarely die but fruit yield is reduced. In a dry summer, canes may become dry and shriveled. [Pg.336]

I judged the one to my right to be a servant by her clothes, her shriveled, weathered features, and her occupation, for she was presently mending a child s britches. The one on my left was dressed as a lady of means, small and plump, somewhat mousy, aged perhaps thirty. She held a book. I had heard her reading aloud as I crossed the anteroom. [Pg.48]

The value is from the liquid phase enthalpy of reaction between cyclohexanone and tert-butyl hydroperoxide from V. L. Antonovskii, E. V. Federova, N. E. Shrivel and V. D. Emelin, Kinet. Ratal., 30, 1235 (1989). [Pg.168]

Osmosis takes place when a solvent moves across a semipermeable membrane. The solvent moves from an area of high solvent concentration to an area of low solvent concentration. Osmosis can be demonstrated using an egg with its shell removed. Remember to handle the egg carefully so the membrane does not break. Place the egg in a container with enough com symp to surround the egg. Observe what happens to the egg over the next day. The egg should shrivel... [Pg.314]

Cracking process by which a compound is broken down into simpler substances, typically employed in petroleum industry to break carbon-carbon bonds Crenation condition that results when cells lose water and shrivel up Critical Mass quantity of fissionable material necessary to give a self-sustaining nuclear reaction... [Pg.338]

Lilac-time was nearly over some of the trees still thrust aloft, in tall purple chandeliers, their tiny balls of blossom, but in many places among their foliage where, only a week before, they had still been breaking in waves of fragrant foam, these were now spent and shriveled and discoloured.dry and scentless...P... [Pg.255]

Pollen grains from FAA-preserved flowers on wild and greenhouse-grown plants were analyzed for cytoplasm stainability. Sterile or aborted pollen grains did not take up the cotton blue-lactophenol stain, and were also conspicuous by their shrunken size and shriveled form. [Pg.528]
