S in the atmosphere which is present as SO2, H2S, and organic sulfur (DMS, (013)28, CS2, COS etc.) oxidizes easily and removes by rainfall, implying that residence time of sulfur in the atmosphere is short. Activities of microorganism takes important role for short-term sulfur cycle. For example, DMS that is produced by plankton transfers from ocean to atmosphere (Lovelock et al. 1972). This sulfur flux is estimated as (1.9-0.6) x 10 mol year (4 2 x 10 g year ). Activities of bacteria promote oxidation-reductiOTi reactimis in soils and affect the rate of sulfur transfer between soils and soil water. For example, sulfate-reducing bacteria and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria promote the following reactions. [Pg.152]

The amount of carbon stored in recoverable reserves of coal, oil, and gas is estimated to be 5,000-10,000 PgC, larger than any other reservoir except the deep sea, and —10 times the carbon content of the atmosphere. Until —1850s this reservoir of carbon was not a significant part of the short-term cycle of carbon. The industrial revolution changed that. [Pg.4341]

A simplified version of the carbon cycle is given in Fig. 7.9. By far the largest reservoir is in marine sediments and sedimentary materials on land (20000000 GtC), mainly in the form of CaC03. However, most of this material is not in contact with the atmosphere and cycles through the solid Earth on geological timescales (see Section 4.1). It therefore plays only a minor role in the short-term cycle of carbon considered here. The next largest reservoir is seawater (about 39 000 GtC), where the carbon is mainly in the dissolved form as HC03 and C03 . On the other hand, one part of the winter surplus is stored as hydrogen in order to be used in the summer to provide base load generation, while the other part of the surplus is sold directly to other application areas. In contrast, hydrogen sale is irrelevant in summer since the surplus is lower and mainly caused by the short-term cycles of photovoltaics. Equipment—client may not have the equipment required to manufacture a specific product. It may be that available capital and installation time are limited such that they simply can not design, acquire, install and test the process equipment to reach the desired capacity within the available budget and time. If a product is in the early stages of its life cycle, the capital required may be hard to justify. A distinction must be made regarding the length of service of the pressure reducing systems. Fatigue failure of any mechanical system depends on time, i.e., the number of cycles to failure. Therefore, the treatment required for a continuous service may not be justified for a short term service. The concentration of iron present in the permeate wax was found to be consistently less than 35 ppm, with over 85% below the 16 ppm level.
