Self-insight

Inability to understand oneself and one s actions, when it results in failure to realize intentions, is tantamount to personal incompetence. Having self-insight and being able to act on one s insight are prerequisites of being personally competent. [Pg.36]

Other forms of behavior have been shown to be similar to the classical addictions. Some people seem unable to control their use of credit cards or, more generally, to control their impulse to obtain goods in a pattern that is detrimental to their economy and, often, their social life. Others seem to be sexually insatiable or at least unable to abstain from the pursuit of new and ever more frequent sexual encounters. These types of behavior are often named manias, obviously to illustrate a state of mind characterized by impoverished self-insight and self-control. The common phenomenological feature of these cases—pathological gambling, eating... [Pg.131]

III. Biopsychiatric treatments exert their therapeutic effect by impairing higher human functions, including emotional responsiveness, social sensitivity, self-awareness or self-insight, autonomy, and self-determination. More drastic effects include apathy, euphoria and mania,1 and lobotomy-like indifference. [Pg.3]

Some degree of spellbinding is characteristic of any compromise of frontal lobe function. Beer et al. (2006) noted that orbitofrontal damage is associated with objective inappropriate social behavior. The patients were aware of social norms of intimacy but they were unaware that their task performances violated these norms. The authors call this an impairment of self-monitoring and self-insight. Bach and David (2006) pointed out that self-awareness deficits are very common in patients with traumatic brain injury and key to the development of behavior disturbances Our research found that lack of social self-awareness predicts behavioural disturbance in acquired and traumatic brain injury independent of cognitive and executive function. ... [Pg.12]

Syntheses of sterically modified biopolymers can clearly yield insights into the presuppositions and possibilities of biological self-organization processes of biopolymers far beyond general thermodynamic and kinetic descriptions of natural systems. [Pg.345]

Evaluate Effectiveness on the Basis of Outputs and Acceptance Once the system has been implemented on its chosen site, its effectiveness needs to be evaluated at frequent intervals so that corrective action can be taken in the event of problems. The first criterion for success is that the system must generate unique insights into the causes of errors and accidents, which would not otherwise have been apparent. Second, the system must demonstrate a capability to specify remedial strategies that, in the long term, lead to enhanced safety, environmental impact and plant losses. Finally, the system must be owned by the workforce to the extent that its value is accepted and it demonstrates its capability to be self-sustaining. [Pg.290]

Filling out a self-assessment questionnaire such as the Myers-Briggs-Type Indicator. This personality inventory provides insights into a person s Jimgian type, which has been found to be a useful basis for purposes such as self-development, career development and career counselling. [Pg.278]

First though, we must outline albeit very briefly, the basic factors important to colloidal stability and self-assembly. It is these areas that clearly hold the insights we require. Throughout the section, we highlight possible control mechanisms available to the natural system. [Pg.101]

The lipid molecule is the main constituent of biological cell membranes. In aqueous solutions amphiphilic lipid molecules form self-assembled structures such as bilayer vesicles, inverse hexagonal and multi-lamellar patterns, and so on. Among these lipid assemblies, construction of the lipid bilayer on a solid substrate has long attracted much attention due to the many possibilities it presents for scientific and practical applications [4]. Use of an artificial lipid bilayer often gives insight into important aspects ofbiological cell membranes [5-7]. The wealth of functionality of this artificial structure is the result of its own chemical and physical properties, for example, two-dimensional fluidity, bio-compatibility, elasticity, and rich chemical composition. [Pg.225]

At the very least that medication is deemed necessary confirms having a condition that is highly stigmatized in many societies, and perhaps more in non-Western (Ng, 1997), and may lead patients to question their self-identity and capabilities in their personal and social roles (Carder, Vuckovic Green, 2003). Insight into the nature of psychiatric illness in turn affects patients attitude to medications (David, 1990) and compliance (Ziguras, Klimidis, Lambert etal, 2001). [Pg.124]

Molecular insight into the protein conformation states of Src kinase has been revealed in a series of x-ray crystal structures of the Src SH3-SH2-kinase domain that depict Src in its inactive conformation [7]. This form maintains a closed structure, in which the tyrosine-phosphorylated (Tyr527) C-terminal tail is bound to the SH2 domain (Fig. 2). The x-ray data also reveal binding of the SH3 domain to the SH2-kinase linker [adopts a polyproline type II (PP II) helical conformation], providing additional intramolecular interactions to stabilize the inactive conformation. Collectively, these interactions cause structural changes within the catalytic domain of the protein to compromise access of substrates to the catalytic site and its associated activity. Significantly, these x-ray structures provided the first direct evidence that the SH2 domain plays a key role in the self-regulation of Src. [Pg.36]
