Self-assembled monolayers development

DEVELOPMENT OF A DNA SENSOR BASED ON ALKANETHIOL SELF-ASSEMBLED MONOLAYER-MODIFIED... [Pg.323]

This chapter introduces three kinds of surface organic modihcation hlms on a magnetic head that we have studied. These are polyfluoroalkylmethacrylate films, X-1P films, and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). It also reviews the works of surface lube on a hard disk surface. In the last, the challenges on the development of a magnetic recording system are discussed. [Pg.211]

Self-assembled monolayers of amphiphilic molecules have been deposited at surfaces since Langmuir and Blodgett developed their dip coating deposition method in 1937.4 These were briefly discussed in Chapter 10 in relation to thiol... [Pg.203]

Hou et al. developed a method that controlled the generation of a nanomolar amount of NO [173]. A self-assembled monolayer of N-nitroso-N-oxy-p-thiomethyl-benzeamine ammonium salt bound to a gold electrode via a thiol linkage was used for the reaction. When an electric potential was applied, one-electron electrochemical oxidation led to the release of NO (Scheme 3.20). There was a linear relationship between the amount of NO generated and the area of the electrode, indicating that the amount of NO release could be controlled by selecting an appropriately sized... [Pg.71]

The first report of surface-immobilized dendrimers was in 1994 [54]. Subsequently, our research group showed that the amine-terminated PAMAM and PPl dendrimers could be attached to an activated mercaptoimdecanoic acid (MUA) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) via covalent amide linkages [55, 56]. Others developed alternative surface immobilization strategies involving metal com-plexation [10] and electrostatic binding [57]. These surface-confined dendrimer monolayers and multilayers have found use as chemical sensors, stationary phases in chromatography, and catalytic interfaces [41,56,58,59]. Additional applications for surface-confined dendrimers are inevitable, and are dependent only on the synthesis of new materials and the development of clever, new immobilization strategies. [Pg.90]

In the second part of this Chapter the thickness of the organic layer under discussion is slightly increased and a closer look at recent developments of more complex surface-bonded systems involving polymers is outlined. Despite the introduction of flexible polymer chains, the surface coating should still be defined and uncontrolled heterogeneities minimized. Here, especially, polymer brush-type layers where self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are used as two-dimensional template systems for the preparation of well-defined surface coatings will be subject of a more detailed discussion. [Pg.397]

Mrksich and co-workers developed a MALDI-based assay scheme making use of a target surface modification by self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) [22]. This combination of SAMs and MALDI is predominantly called SAMDI (selfassembled monolayers for MALDI). For SAMDI, a self-assembled monolayer with reactive end groups is used in order to covalently bind enzyme substrates to a surface. To... [Pg.295]

Of course, a successful proposal must also forge ahead into less familiar territory. It is not enough to conduct the easy experiments you must approach the cutting edge or forefront of your field. For this reason, Aga goes on to describe how the optimized immunoassay will eventually be used to test for analytes in more complex environmental samples, and Spain proposes a sequence of experiments that will culminate in the deposition of translationally hot metal atoms on a self-assembled monolayer system. The important point in these examples is how authors develop a clear and logical order for their proposed work. [Pg.458]

A Au-coated substrate is another model surface, to which many surface characterization methods can be applied. To achieve surface-initiated ATRP on Au-coated substrates, some haloester compounds with thiol or disulflde group were developed [80-84]. Self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of these compounds were successfully prepared on a Au-coated substrate and used for ATRP graft polymerization. Because of the limited thermal stability of the S - Au bond, the ATRP was carried out at a relatively low temperature, mostly at room temperature, by using a highly active catalyst system and water as a (co)solvent (water-accelerated ATRP). [Pg.11]
