Territoriality familiarity

According to the U.S. National Nanotechnology Institute, nanotechnology encompasses research and development to synthesize, control, and manipulate stmctures, devices, and systems of novel properties and functions because of their size at the atomic, molecular, or macromolecular levels in the length scale ranging from approximately 1 to 100 nanometers. Indeed, this length scale is of particular relevance to heterogeneous catalysis, where the active sites are small crystallites or domains of the active phase. The reaction typically involves atom-molecule interactions, and the active sites are placed in or on an extended solid where the access paths to the active sites are tens to hundreds of nanometers. Ecologically, female meadow voles are territorial, know their neighbors, and are more tolerant of each other. They exemplify the dear enemy concept familiar neighbors reduce aggression toward one another because they pose less threat to each other than newcomers without a territoiy, who might compete for territory, mates, or resources. Males are dispersal prone, and neighbor relations are more ephemeral. Each male s home range overlaps with those of several females (Ferkin, 1988). 

Urban feral cats of both sexes sniff marks of sprayed urine more if the donor is a strange cat (from a different town) and respond least to the urine of a familiar cat. Since one male roams over the territories of several females, it is assumed that male-male competition has selected males that spray mark more and respond more strongly to urine marks (Natoli, 1985). 

Salamanders of the ambystomatid family may also use territorial marks. In contrast to red-backed salamanders, which are repelled by conspecific odors or fecal pellets (Jaeger and Gergits, 1979 Jaeger, 1986), spotted salamanders, Amhystoma maculatum, are attracted to paper towels on which conspecifics had lived for 4 days, whether the latter were familiar or unfamiliar (Ducey and Ritsema, 1988). 

The situation in trans- and ciG-decalin is complicated by the symmetry elements. If this symmetry is destroyed, e.g. by introducing dimethyl substituents, we get back to reassuringly familiar territory in which two chiral centres lead to four configurational isomers. The same is true in the trans- and cw-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane series. 

Of course, a successful proposal must also forge ahead into less familiar territory. It is not enough to conduct the easy experiments you must approach the cutting edge or forefront of your field. For this reason, Aga goes on to describe how the optimized immunoassay will eventually be used to test for analytes in more complex environmental samples, and Spain proposes a sequence of experiments that will culminate in the deposition of translationally hot metal atoms on a self-assembled monolayer system. The important point in these examples is how authors develop a clear and logical order for their proposed work. 

My journeys with salvinorin A (hereafter called salvinorin) are more varied than those of any other psychedelic I ve used, and include both my best and worst psychedelic journeys. My understanding and the content of these journeys has evolved with repeated use. Certain ideas and perceptions have become clearer as I ve become familiar with the territory, although the entire experience still remains largely incomprehensible, and there exists a feeling of having just stepped over the threshold into an immensely vast dimension. A description of the general framework of most of my salvinorin journeys is given below, followed by excerpts of notes from my journeys. 

It is at this point, when the supposed transuranium elements were out of the picture, that the problem was finally solved. It happened because the chemists were now in familiar territory, with elements of known chemistry and tested radiochemistry. When their findings contradicted the physics assumption of small nuclear changes, the discrepancy was apparent and had to be resolved. Many other skin glands of mammals also produce odourous secretions to which behavioural functions are attributed marking of territories, recognition of species, of sex or individuals, etc.. They may also serve in familiarization with strange surroundings e.g. "gaining confidence" as exemplified by the behavior of rabbits (J ) A recent review on this subject is given by Muller-Schwarze (18). 

At this point, we could branch off in several directions and must (unlike Lord Ronald in Stephen Leacock s "Gertrude the Governess") resist the urge to jump on our horse and ride madly off in all of them. The territory galloped over can still be described as "respectable but new or less familiar," and we encounter ... 

In summary Our familiar three-dimensional reality is called the "middle world" in the Shamanic model. Both the lower and upper worlds are internal dimensions which are entered via altered states of consciousness. Because hyperspace is perpendicular to ego-awareness, consciousness is the bridge which links all of the worlds together. Access to these inner dimensions is dependent upon many factors. Everyone enters them while dreaming, but hypnosis, meditation, severe stress and many other catalysts, including psychedelic drugs, can also provide admittance. For the purposes of this book, we will concentrate on conscious Shamanic intent in conjunction with psychotropic plants as our method of entry into hyperspace. But first, having differentiated the territory, we must further examine its structure and contents. 

The structure of a typical spill response organization is shown in Figure 4. A popular command structure today is a system called the Incident Command System or ICS. This is similar to the organization shown in Figure 4, but involves common elements to ensure uniformity across organizations and to make it easier for federal responders to deal with contingency plans in areas other than their own familiar territories. In this book we shall be describing the biochemical make-up and behaviour of the living organism in some detail. In order to do this, we need constantly to use certain chemical words, phrases, and ideas. To those who have studied chemistry, what follows here is familiar territory they would do better to skip the rest of this chapter. But, for those who are unacquainted with its jargon, there are included here a few brief paragraphs of definition in the hope that, having been disposed of, they need not trouble us unduly later on. 

Once the sales force can report the consumption of a product by account, performance may be monitored on the basis of knowing the extent of the market. The reported consumption of all accounts, as obtained from the field, is totaled by end use and is compared with industry statistics. It may be found that the sales force does not know where an important proportion of the product is being consumed. This indicates that the sales force is not familiar with the total market. The analysis can even be carried down to the territory and individual level. If the uses of the product have been categorized by Standard Industry Classification, it may be possible to break down industry statistics on the basis of the number of productive employees by regions or states as reported in the Census of Manufacturers. From this may be determined the level of market penetration in a particular territory. 

As the familiarity with the system has increased, so has the number of uses which we have found for the information it has yielded. These uses now include sales analysis, and the determination of sales territories warehousing and distribution studies advertising and promotional programs end-use market studies the surveying of competitive products. Information obtained on end uses and competitive products is, in turn, applied in our product development programs which constitute a highly important and costly part of competing in the plastics industry.
