Selenium titer

Studies on chlor-alkali workers in Scandinavia [122-124] have reported minimal and apparently reversible renal effects from mercury exposures in this occupational group as evaluated by urinary excrebon of NAG, albumin and titers of autoantibodies. These investigators noted that a small number of susceptible individuals may exist and that selenium status appears to have a major effect on urinary NAG excretion [124]. 

Selenium in a 10.0-g soil sample is.distilled as the tetrabromide, which is collected in aqueous solution where it/is hydrolyzed to SeOs. The SeOs " is determined iodometrically, requiring 4.5 mL of standard thiosulfate solution for the titration. If the thiosulfate titer is 0.049 mg K2Cr207/mL, what is the concentration of selenium in the soil in ppm ... 

In further trials in turkey poults (50), inclusion of AFBj in the diet at 0.5 yg/g reduced leukocyte counts as well as serum complement titers. Also, serum Y globulins increased during the AFBj exposure period. Toxic effects were diminished by the addition of 2 yg/g Selenium (Se) in the diet (50). Selenium, at concentrations that increased liver glutathione peroxidase (GSH.Px) actvity, probably detoxified the AFBj[ 2,3 oxide... 

Using dogs as their experimental animals, Sheffy and Schultz (1978) found that the humoral response could be influenced by selenium and Vitamin E, Vaccination with a canine distemper, infectious hepatitis virus vaccine resulted in lower antibody titers in animals deficient in selenium and Vitamin E than in control animals. The appearance of measurable antibody titers following immunization was also delayed in the Vitamin E, selenium-deficient dogs. The primary immune response to SRBC was unaffected in these dogs, whereas it was the secondary response the (IgG) antl-SRBC antibody levels that were reduced in the deficient animals. 

The triphasic response to selenium is similar in fact to antigenic stimulation of tumor transplants. The dose response effect of Se when added to the diets of mice or guinea pigs for immune enhancement appears to be 1-2 ppm as indicated by the PFC assay performed with mice and the DNCB challenge of guinea pigs. When selenium is administered by injection, the immune response is measured by the hemagglutination titers and is dose related as well...
