Quinones, lipid-soluble substances involved in electron transport, can also be used as biomarkers. Lipski et al. (155) u.sed quinone analyses, physiological tests, and fatty acid profiles to differentiate Gram-negative non-fermentative bacteria isolated from biofilters. Quinone type was found to be an efficient method to group isolates prior to the analysis of results from the physiological tests. The detection of quinones appears to be restricted to the discrimination of isolated colonies and has limited potential to the analysis of mixed populations.

The hypotensive and sedative drug reserpine (256) has long been known to decompose in daylight. The photolysis has been studied in aqueous solution under a mercury discharge tube [ 159] and in chloroform at 360-370 nm [ 160]. The conclusions were essentially the same. Electrochemical detection has also been further recommended as an excellent alternative for the determination of seven sedatives and carazolol in swine liver and kidney (523). In this study, significant selectivity and sensitivity improvements compared to existing methods have been reported. 

Tentative confirmation of suspected liquid chromatographic peaks has been achieved in the analysis of carazolol and seven sedatives in swine kidney, by using photodiode-array detection in the wavelengUi range of 220-320 nm. It was reported (526) that further identification could be made possible if the corresponding fractions of the eluate were submitted off-line to two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography. 

The psychostimulant effects of the glucocorticoids are well known (80), and their dose dependency is recognized (SED-11, 817) they may amount to little more than euphoria or comprise severe mental derangement, for example mania in an adult with no previous psychiatric history (SEDA-17, 446) or catatonic stupor demanding electroconvulsive therapy (81). In their mildest form, and especially in children, the mental changes may be detectable only by specific tests of mental function (82). Mental effects can occur in patients treated with fairly low doses they can also occur after withdrawal or omission of treatment, apparently because of adrenal suppression (83,84).
