In order to ensure the right focus and direction, the top two priorities for each of the three DDSC components were identified. However, for Brazil it is proposed to focus on the categories where the operation wants to improve in 1 year horizon, as the highest weighted score categories have the same current and future states.

As can be seen, a category score may help to focus efforts on areas of the process most in need of attention and accounting for the perceived priorities at a given time. 

Using this system, SC Johnson scores both raw materials and formulated products, tracks the score of all raw material purchases and measures the overall percentage of materials that fall into each rating category, that is considered Best or RUM . The scores are used to set company goals, as well as to reward the formulators and chemists who use the system to improve the environmental and human health profiles of individual products and product lines. 

The category risks to personnel and plant consists of two parts environmental abuse potential and occupational health/safety hazards and, here again, points are subtracted from a basic score for environmental/safety hazards. 

The maximum. scores for the five categories are summarised in Table 2.5. 

In the case when one of the two measurements of the contingency table is divided in ordered categories, one can construct a so-called thermometer plot. On this plot we represent the ordered measurement along the horizontal axis and the scores of the dominant latent vectors along the vertical axis. The solid line in Fig. 32.9 displays the prominent features of the first latent vector which, in the context of our illustration, is called the women/men factor. It clearly indicates a sustained progress of the share of women doctorates from 1966 onwards. The dashed line corresponds with the second latent vector which can be labelled as the chemistry/ other fields factor. This line shows initially a decline of the share of chemistry and a slow but steady recovery from 1973 onwards. We examined the data in a number of ways. One was to use the classification system established by the APA to categorize levels of depression. The APA system, which was also adopted by NICE, divides scores on the Hamilton depression scale into the following five categories ... 

ISO 14042 defines normalization as calculation of the magnitude of indicator results relative to reference information . The main aim of normalizing the category indicator results is to better understand the relative importance and magnitude of these results for each product system under study. For the purpose of normalization in LCA, Wegener Sleeswijk et al. [13] have made a comprehensive inventory of extractions and emissions of substances for the world level in the year 2000. The normalization in this project is based on these reference emissions and extractions. As a result the normalized score of an impact category for the cushion vinyl floor covering case is expressed as a fraction of the world problem. 

Figure 2 shows the weighted impact scores of the use of 1 m2 cushion vinyl floor covering, broken down into environmental impact categories and Life Cycle stages. 

Results are given for four different scenarios of waste treatment. Note that the scores are the results of a weighting across different impacts categories. 

In the LCIA community there is much discussion on the characterization of heavy metals for toxicity. Due to large residence times in the environment, the characterization factors for heavy metals tend to dominate the impact scores for toxicity impact categories. This might suppress the impacts of other relevant toxic substances, like DEHP. For this reason the results are calculated using the characterization factors derived by the Usetox model instead of the Uses model. Uses model is the original baseline characterization model that is recommended in the Dutch LCA Handbook [1]. 

The impact category global warming contributes most to the total environmental impact score (60-50%). 

Also the impact category aquatic ecotoxicity has a small contribution to the total environmental impact score (about 8%), with an exception for the landfill scenario with DEHP emission (about 17%). Emission of DEHP from an uncontrolled landfill site, the landfill scenario with DEHP emission, appears to have a substantial contribution to the total weighted impact score.
