Compared to the Category Test, SSP and SRT results show a relatively mixed performance profile. This profile is indicative of temporal lobe impairment and may explain the idiosyncratic character of PCP-induced brain dysfunction. Other HRB subtest data suggest that parietal lobe-mediated functions are less influenced by PCP abuse, since approximately 30 percent of this sample had error-free performances on a test sensitive to finger agnosia.

Test (WCST Heaton, Chelune, Talley, Kay, Curtiss, 1993), Category Test and Trail Making Tests (Reitan Wolfson, 1985), Stroop Test (Stroop, 1935), and other tests developed by R. M. Ruff that bear his name. There are many newer ones that may be appropriate to use as well, depending upon the suspected problem you want to assess. Some of these neuropsychological tests can be self-administered, either on a computer or by paper and pencil. However, many of these tests must be administered and results interpreted by a highly trained therapist, usually a clinical psychologist.

To ascertain whether dietary food records were inaccurate because of associated mild cognitive deficits, blood levels of these nutrients were measured. Scores on the Halstead-Reitan Category Test were worse in subjects with lower blood levels of ascorbate, riboflavin, Bj2, and folate, while those on the Wexler Memory Test were correlated with ascorbate and Bj2 levels. These findings do not appear to be explained by age variation within the group, since there was no overall correlation between any nutritional variable and age per se. To correct for any effects of educational status and income level, analysis of covariance was performed it did not alter the degree or the statistical significance of the associations between performance on the cognitive tests and blood levels of the vitamins.
