A ruling has been passed by the European Commission s scientific committee on toxicity, ecotoxicity and the environment, (the CSTEE), that the use of acetyl tributyl citrate as a plasticiser in children s toys is safe. It has also ruled that the current risk assessment models are reliable. Brief details are given in this little article. [Pg.34]

A European Union (EU) risk assessment of di-2-ethylhexylphthalate (DEHP) underestimated the substance s potential damage to the environment, the commission s scientific committee on toxicology (CSTEE) says. The study was completed by a team of Swedish scientists in September 2001 for the European Commission (EC). The Swedish scientists had recommended in September that no measures were required to reduce the risk of pollution from DEHP. But CSTEE will begin a new round of research shortly, as part of a review of the scientists assessment, to determine the extent of environmental risks posed by DEHP. CSTEE says that in many cases there is a need for... [Pg.54]

Europe s controversy over soft PVC toys looks set to continue after EU health experts rejected the best available method for assessing the dangers to children. The so-called Dutch migration test was designed to mimic the way phthalate softeners leak out of PVC when it is sucked or chewed. Manufacturers had hoped the EU s Scientific Committee for Toxicity, Ecotoxicity and the Environment would accept the method as a standard test for phthalate migration, allowing it to be used across the EU, but the committee ruled that the Dutch test was unreliable. It also rejected a similar test developed in the UK, and issued a list of changes that would have to be made before either... [Pg.87]

The TDI values settle by the EFSA in 2005 (Table 3) were different from those calculated by the Scientific Committee for Toxicity, Ecotoxicity and the Environment (CSTEE) in 1998 [134] based on the phthalate migration from soft PVC toys and child care articles, and the available toxicity studies on animals at that time [117, 122, 135], with the following values DBP (TDI of 100 pg/kg b.w./day), BBP (TDI of 200 pg/kg b.w./day), and DiDP (TDI of 200 pg/kg b.w./day), but they... [Pg.321]

To overcome some of these difficulties we started a program to monitor the inorganic and organic constituents in major world rivers. The study "Carbon Transport in Major World Rivers" is sponsored by the Scientific Committee for Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Within its framework over 50 % of the total water discharged to the sea is being monitored at least once a month. [Pg.37]

Faculty of Pharmacy, MUG. Since 2000, he has been the head of the Department of Food Sciences, MUG. He has published approximately 200 papers, 17 book chapters, three books published by Elsevier and CRC Press Taylor Francis, and approximately 300 symposial abstracts. He has been a member of approximately 30 national and international scientific associations and organizations (including nine editorial boards, e.g., The Science of the Total Environment), for example, the International Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and WG Marine Board—European Science Foundation. He has visited 14 countries as a visiting professor or research scientist. Dr. Szefer has reviewed approximately 600 manuscripts for more than 60 journals. He received several scientific awards, for example, one from the Scientific Secretary of the Division VII of the Polish Academy of Sciences nine awards from the Minister of Health and a joint award from the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Natural Resources, and Forestry. His research is focused on food and marine chemistry, and bioanalytics. [Pg.503]
