The selection of materials to be used in design dictates a basic understanding of the behavior of materials and the principles that govern such behavior. If proper design of suitable materials of construction is incorporated, the eqiiipment should deteriorate at a uniform and anticipated gradual rate, which will allow scheduled maintenance or replacement at regular inteivals. If localized forms of corrosion are characteristic of the combination of materials and environment, the materials engineer should still be able to predict the probable life of equipment, or devise an appropriate inspection schedule to preclude unexpected failures. The concepts of predictive, or at least preventive, maintenance are minimum requirements to proper materials selection. This approach to maintenance is certainly intended to minimize the possibility of unscheduled production shutdowns because of corrosion failures, with their attendant possible financial losses, hazard to personnel and equipment, and resultant environmental pollution. [Pg.2424]

With the advance of the turbine to idle speed, the turbine is ready to synchronize, and control is considered in synchronization. Both manual and automatic synchronizing are available locally. The unit is synchronized, and the main breaker closed. The speed reference will be switched to become a load reference. Local repair of delamination originally caused by non-durable surface treatment is only temporarily successful at best. The surface treatment on the unrepaired portion of the assembly remains susceptible to attack and the area of delamination will likely continue to grow once the assembly is put back into service and exposed to moist conditions. Replacement or complete remanufacture of the component is the only way to permanently address this type of damage. However, time-limited repairs using bonded or mechanical methods can be used to extend the life of the component until a major overhaul is scheduled. In some cases such as widespread disbond of fuselage doublers, mechanical repairs (rivets and fastened doublers) and continued inspection are used to extend the life of the skin indefinitely because of the high cost of replacement. [Pg.1173]

Section 11 of the 1968 Act states that Sections 1-10 of the 1956 Act and Sections 1-16 of the 1968 Act shall not apply to works subjected to the Alkalis Act (those premises now listed in the Health and Safety (Emission into Atmosphere Regulations)). Inspections should be carried out as study-specific inspections for critical phases of the study or as a batch of process inspections relating to critical tasks which are performed regularly and although may not be inspected for a specific study are inspected on a regular basis (e.g., once per month). The coordination of inspections is perhaps more difficult to predict than actually conducting the critical event. The use of local QA staff close to the sites where the field work is being conducted helps to reduce the travel time to the field sites and also the down time if the critical event cannot be made at the specified time.
