Salaried workers

Due to wide variations in the manner in which corporations report benefits to the U.S. Government s regulatory bodies, not all plans will have been uncovered or correctly evaluated during our effort to research this data. Also, the availability to employees of such plans will vary according to the qualifications that employees must meet to become eligible. For example, some benefit plans may be available only to salaried workers—others only to employees who work more than 1,000 hours yearly. Benefits that are available to employees of the main or parent company may not be available to employees of the subsidiaries. In addition, employers frequently alter the nature and terms of plans offered. 

World War I precipitated the transformation of Du Pont from a single to a multisectored enterprise. The company swiftly built new facilities for the production of propellants (smokeless powder) and military explosives, first for the Allies and then for the U.S. military forces. Production rose from 8.4 million pounds of propellants in 1914 to 455 million pounds in April 1917. The number of employees and salaried workers as well as capital expenditures and profits grew proportionately. 

Standardized mortality ratio (SMR) in the subgroup was 328 (5 observed/1.52 expected deaths, 95% confidence interval [Cl] 33-61, p value not reported). Kimbrough et al. (1999a) found no significant increases in mortality related to ischemic heart disease, hypertension with heart disease, other diseases of the heart, cerebrovascular disease, or circulatory system (arteries, veins, pulmonary circulation) in a study of 7,075 male and female capacitor workers. One of the subgroups (male salaried workers) in this study had a significantly decreased risk of mortality from ischemic heart as indicated by an SMR lower than 100 (44 observed/97.5 expected deaths, SMR=45, 95% Cl 107-766, p<0.01). Neither of these studies reported adequate quantitative exposure data. The inconsistent results of these studies could be due to differences in exposure levels, durations, and latencies, as well as types of Aroclors and cohort sizes. Additional information on these studies is provided in Section 3.2.8.2.I. 

The divers who were involved in the construction of these docks and breakers got 540 per day. Since they could only work during slack water, a diver might only be submerged for an hour or two a day, and when he was down there must be another diver above water. The salaries of the other workers were also high but did not compare with the divers . It was expected that labor charges alone would be 20% greater than if the same work were performed in the contiguous 48 states. 

If it is expected that a supplier may have a strike, the company may stockpile items. Some needed materials like coal are dumped on a cleared piece of ground. Others may be stored in box cars or tank cars if the present storage facilities are full. This is expensive storage, but it is only a temporary situation. Actually, most chemical plants do not close if the hourly workers strike. The salaried employees run the plant, and the supply of chemicals is not stopped, although it may be reduced. 

Yu Qiuli is acknowledging the past imbalance of neglect of improving the salary structure because of over-accumulation of capital for industry. China s work force has had its wages frozen for 20 years (1937-1977) and this has seriously undermined worker and peasant incentives. The Chinese government granted salary increases to 40% of its work force in order to enlist worker support in the modernization drive. Now the government must provide a modest increase in consumer durables. 

The wage rate is a loaded rate that assumes a multiplier of 2 on worker salary to account for fringe benefits, administration costs, and profit.

Professional athletes are commonly paid millions of dollars every year, making far more money than the average person will ever see in an entire lifetime, including myself. Do they earn it There is little question that they worked hard to reach their level of skill and are extraordinarily talented at what they do, but in a world where people like teachers, social workers, and other community workers can hardly make ends meet, the fairness of their salaries is decidedly debatable. 

Professional athletes should get good salaries, but not the millions like they get now. It s just too much. Their job isn t dangerous, except maybe for football or ice hockey where it s easy to get a bad injury. It s easy to get a bad injury in lots of other jobs, too, like construction, but they don t get millions of dollars. I guess, the difference is that nobody likes to watch construction workers. There s fun in the game and people like the competition, sports teams bring lots of money into a city s economy.

It should be stated that the whole of this work was unpaid from Government sources, the workers receiving only their University salaries, in cases where they were members of staff, or the value of their Scholarships, if they held any such distinctions. Beyond the United States, salaries for computational chemists are generally lower. In countries with markets that are more controlled and less entrepreneurial, workers pay for greater job security with lower income. In the United States, individuals are compensated more because they take greater risk and personal responsibility for their own needs.

There were non-statistically significant (p>0.05) increases in mortality from skin melanomas in the hourly male workers (5 observed/3.8 expected, SMR=130, 95% Cl 42-303), hourly female workers (3 observed/2.0 expected, SMR=144, 95% Cl 30 21), and salaried male workers (4 observed/1.9 expected, SMR=210, 95% Cl 57-538 in the Kimbrough et al. (1999a) study of capacitor manufacturing workers summarized in Section 3.2.8.2.I. 

Analyses for mortality from all cancers combined were stratified in the following ways (1) hourly versus salaried compensation schedule, and gender of worker (analyses were also conducted for various cancer sites ) (2) gender, employment duration, and latency. Only limited exposure to other chemicals was reported.
