Salad rocket

You can even grow a crop of salad leaves in the winter by starting tbem off indoors in modules and hardening tbem off before planting out into tbe window box. In frosty weather, the crop will need to be protected witb a cloche or cold frame. Good choices to try are winter purslane, mizuna, salad rocket, and corn salad. [Pg.20]

Brassicas Brassicaceae/Cruciferae) Some in this group are quick-growing vegetables, such as radish, salad rocket, and salad mustard. Most, such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, calabrese, cauliflower, kale, and turnip, are in the ground for several months, and it is these crops that need to be rotated. [Pg.208]

Other cruciferous vegetables may be used in the human diet either as condiments, as it is the case of Sinapis alba (white mustard) or as salad crops, such as Nasturtium officinale (watercress), Eruca sativa (salad rocket), and Diplotaxis tenuifolia (wild rocket). These species are eaten all over the world in salads and soups. Predominantly, the leaves of these species are eaten raw or cooked, although Eruca and D. catholica flowers are also consumed. Other species from Diplotaxis genus such as D. acris and D. simplex have been reported to be edible components of green salads in North Africa, Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan. Finally, other crops can be used because of their roots, as it is the case of Raphanus sativus (radish), which is an important vegetable crop worldwide, especially in China, Japan, Korea, and Southeastern Asia. [Pg.644]

By way of a specific example let us consider erucic acid. The main commercial source of erucic acid is a specially bred form of rape seed (HEAR) as pointed out above. With European consumption being around 60 000 tpa almost 40 000 ha of land are used to grow rapeseed for erucic acid production in Europe. The high level of erucic found in this type of rape seed oil make it unsuitable for human consumption, owing to the indigestibility of such large amounts of this acid. Erucic acid is also the major fatty acid to be found in nasturtium and crambe seeds (up to 75% and 56% respectively), and it is also found in the salad herb, rocket. [Pg.188]

Eruca sativa, also known as Rocket or arugula, is usually used as a salad component, but there is interest in using it as a lubricant or biodiesel crop (Li et al., 2009). The seeds contain approximately 45% erucic acid and about 9% gadoleic acid (C20 l) (Lazzeri et al., 2004).
