Signs safety

Safety signs of approved types, available from laboratory supply houses and safety equipment dealers, should be posted in appropriate spots. The door leading out of the laboratory should be marked EXIT, while the door to a back room should be marked NO EXIT. The location of a fire extinguisher must be clearly marked. Signs are available for every type of hazard. Homemade signs not conforming to official standards should not be considered. 

Every laboratory is different. Standard safety features when applied to a given situation may be insufficient in some cases, superfluous in others. There will also be times when work is being done with materials or procedures not covered in available literature. Here the laboratory operator must use a combination of experience, knowledge, and common sense. The last of these may often be the most important. Planning a laboratory and making it operate safely thus becomes a custom procedure. 

Electrical safety signs should be used to clearly warn people of hazards associated with the systems, facilities and equipment.

Cover means of communicating health and safety information m all workplaces. Include illuminated signs, alarms, verbal communication, fire safety signs, marking of pipework, etc. 

The elevator motor room should be identified with safety signs as required in BS 5655 and should be secured to allow access by authorized persons only. 

All appropriate warning signs must comply with the Safety Signs Regulations 1980 and must be displayed prior to commencement and for the duration of the work to be carried out (see BS 5378). Workplaces must be kept safe and tidy and all access/exit areas clear of obstruction. Additional information is available from HSE publications.

The isocyanate and polyol storage units must not share pumps or any fittings. The fitting must be such that there is no way that the wrong material can be added to a tank. All tanks must be clearly labeled with their contents and the appropriate safety signs, for example, isocyanate hazard signs. Most regulatory authorities will require the tanks to be in a suitably sized bunded (diked) area.

Kits of assorted safety signs are available from most laboratory supply dealers. These contain most general labels necessary in a clinical laboratory. Some examples of the contents of one kit are eye wash, use in hood, safety shower, empty cylinder, and wear eye protection in this area. ... 

Of particular importance to laboratories are diamond safety signs, prohibitive signs, and triangle danger signs. Each sign encloses a descriptive picture. 

Personnel must be properly trained to be able to identify potential hazards, to operate the equipment, and to respond in the event of an accident. Appropriate safety signs (see Figure 2.36) should be used to alert personnel of pofenfial hazards in a particular area. 

The authors also include a discussion of the current ASTM Z 535.2 proposal for Safety Signs. This system combines three elements color, shape, and signal words to create three stinctive levels of hazard alert signs. ASTM uses the traditional signal words Danger , Warning, Caution . These words are not independent elements, but are always combined with specific colors and specific shapes.

The safety sign directive 92/58/EEC is the 9th individual directive based on 89/ 391/EEC framework directive [6-20]. It lays down minimum requirements for the provision of safety and health signs at workplaces. The placing of dangerous chemical substances, preparations, and products on the market is excluded from the scope of this directive as well as the transport of such goods by road, rail, air, inland waterway, and sea.
