Safety Sign Directive

The safety sign directive 92/58/EEC is the 9th individual directive based on 89/ 391/EEC framework directive [6-20]. It lays down minimum requirements for the provision of safety and health signs at workplaces. The placing of dangerous chemical substances, preparations, and products on the market is excluded from the scope of this directive as well as the transport of such goods by road, rail, air, inland waterway, and sea.

It is the obligation of an employer to provide the appropriate safety signs at workplaces where risks exist or caimot be avoided. The signs must fulfil the requirements according to the provisions in the aimexes of directive 92/58/EEC. They are not allowed to deviate in regard to form, color, design, or any other aspect. 

Perimeter fences that block sidewalks must contain adequate signs directing pedestrian traffic to a safe walkway. Place primary signs on the perimeter fence. However, use other signs to conununicate other safety-related information to pedestrians. Inform contractors to keep all corridors and exit doors clear at aU times. Keep all external exit ways, walks, and drives free from debris, material, tools, and vehicles. Contractors mnst conduct all safety training and education of their employees. Many healthcare organizations may reqnire some construction workers to attend facility-conducted sessions. 

This subpart details the signs required when hazards are present and the notifications required when an employee is nearthat hazard. There are six main signs danger, caution, exit, safety instruction, directional, and traffic signs, that are used on a construction site. The subpart also states what color each sign must be and the size requirements for every sign.

Plastic Plastic is a cost-effective, lightweight and durable material for safety signs. Plastic signs confonn to well-curved surfaces and are an option for indoor and outdoor installation. These signs can withstand harsh outdoor conditions for one to two years. This material is commonly used for directional signage. 

Empty cylinders must to be treated as full, except in designated storage areas where they should be segregated. Storage areas must be marked with appropriate safety signs and warnings. Direct heat must not be applied to cylinders. 

Most deviations (82%) belong to the high likelihood category, i.e. they are frequently re-occurring deviations. Most of these deviations (71 %) have low consequences implying that they are signs indicating events that are not directly related to safety consequences. 

The facility must be designed to control access. Signs should designate restricted areas. Clothing requirements for entry should be identified. There should be directional air control with adequate ventilation rates. Primary containment equipment such as chemical fume hoods, a Class I or Class II (Type B) biological safety cabinet, or a glove box system should be available for use with known or suspect chemical carcinogens or other toxic substances.
