Standard that provides the requirements for the design and use of safety tags and barricade tapes and reflects harmonization with the international standards by permitting different colors to be used with the safety alert symbols that are a means of alerting people to temporary hazards often associated with construction equipment installation, maintenance, repair, lockout, or other transient conditions. Safety tags and barricade tapes are used to identify a temporary hazard. They should be used only until such time as the identified hazard is eliminated or the hazardous operation is completed.

According to the European Regulation on ClassificatiOTi, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP Regulation) [13] (see Sect. 26.6.3) hazard symbols are not compulsory in the labelling of medicines for patients safety however, symbols referring to the risk of flammability and explosion are needed. For flammable substances the need depends mainly on their flashpoint. 

Caution Use this message to warn of hazardous situations which may result in minor or moderate injury. Do not use for situations where there is a possibility of death or severe injury. Caution signs without a safety alert symbol may be used to alert against unsafe practices that can result in property damage only. Yellow is used to identify Caution signs. 

Specification of the hazard symbols, indications of danger and relevant risk and safety phrases for the protection of the environment... 

These symbols, usually printed black on an orange background, are standard across Europe for indicating hazards (HSE, 2009). A hazard symbol will normally be accompanied with risk and safety phrases summarizing the hazard and appropriate action. This system will be replaced by a worldwide system in 2015 (see Appendix 2.4).

Adhesive containers should be labeled with the appropriate hazard symbols. In the storage facilities, no ignition sources should be present or allowed to come into contact with the solvents or their fumes, and the generation of sparks should be avoided. Additionally, electrical equipment is required to be explosion proof, and all containers should be earthed. It is also mandatory for personnel to be equipped with safety shoes having conductive soles to minimize the accumulation of static electricity. Similarly, production equipment or vehicles should not generate any sparks.

The Chemistry Matter and Change program uses safety symbols to alert you and your students to possible laboratory hazards. These symbols are provided in the student text inside the front cover and are explained below. Be sure your students understand each symbol before they begin an activity that displays a symbol. 

All chemical substances have to be evaluated to decide if they are classified as dangerous according to the requirements of the DSD. These dangerous properties are communicated to the user by standardised labelling, which consists of a dangerous symbol, information on hazardous properties (risk, R phrases) and advice on safety (S phrases). 

A very important chemical safety measure is informing users about the hazards of chemicals through symbols and phrases on the packaging labels and through additional comprehensive safety information. The skull and crossbones symbol is a well-known early example applied to poisons.
