Safe behavior opportunity

Every worker is different and each comes to work with a different attitude toward work and their own safety at work. It will take a concerted, if not impossible, effort to elicit safe behavior from every worker. But, if a comprehensive approach to accident prevention and motivation is used, the opportunity for success with the majority will be greatly enhanced. [Pg.90]

This seems to be a common theme in supervisory coimseling and performance appraisal sessions. However, few, if any, managers or supervisors have the talent and time to "fix" an employee s weaknesses. They can provide objective feedback, of course, to support desired (e.g., safe) behavior and correct imdesired (e.g., at-risk) behavior. Here, I mean more than a list of job components on a behavioral checklist. I am referring to a person s relative ability to perform a certain job. This process could be used to hold people accountable for numerous behaviors or behavioral outcomes. It is quite analogous to the standard environmental audit conducted throughout industrial complexes to survey equipment conditions, environmental hazards, and the availability of emergency supplies. Actually, most equipment and enviroiunental audits reflect behaviors. An equipment guard in place, a tool appropriately sharpened, a work area neat and clean, and equipment power locked out properly are in that "safe" condition because of employees behaviors. A behavior auditor might look for an SBO regarding any number of safe environmental conditions. Observations of employees on a daily basis is highly recommended as a means of conq>limenting them for safe behavior. The supervisor should also correct any unsafe behavior observed and ask employees if they have any safety issues to discuss. Daily observations also provide the opportunity to evaluate the work area for any safety conditions that may need correction. [Pg.25]

Another method to assess skills is to observe how the client works with others in group sessions, how the client interacts with others during nontherapy situations at your center, or even to observe client interaction with you in and out of session. Observation of this social behavior provides insight into how the client may interact with others outside treatment, and whether that style of interaction is appropriate. Finally, role-playing in session gives you an opportunity to observe the client in action. For example, you may want a client to role-play with you in session how he or she will deal with specific relationship problems in order to observe how the client might interact outside of session. This provides an opportunity to correct inappropriate or dysfunctional behavior in a safe situation, as well as practice new skills. In addition, you get to observe the client under some pressure if the role-play is done realistically, and that will provide you a great deal of information that can help you help your client. [Pg.156]

The basic premise of behavior modification programs is that the primary cause of accidents is worker error. This blame-the-victim concept provides little opportunity for effective accident prevention. Behavior modification does not focus on the fundamental safety problems that we face in the continuous process industry.
