PET has been gaining in popularity as a result of its enhanced sensitivity and resolution with respect to SPECT at the millimetre scale, allowing clinicians to study drug distribution in vivo (10). Indeed, it is estimated that by 2010 there will be approximately two million PET scans per year, of which the majority will image the metabolism of the 18F-labeled fluoro-deoxyglucose (FDG) (11). The increased sensitivity in turn reduces the concentration of the administered radiopharmaceutical required to 10 8-10 10M. In summary, we can expect that most disulfides will have Cat separations of less than 6.5 A unless they are stretched across a 0 barrel or perhaps a short loop. The majority will have either the left-handed spiral conformation or the right-handed hook conformation.

Paint compounds which do not provide these features to a satisfactory degree are either low-grade paints or merely coatings. A number of coatings have been offered on the market to provide protection against fire. And, we hope that many chemistry majors will consider future careers as chemistry teachers where doing classroom demonstrations can be common. This section in this textbook is devoted to careful consideration of how to conduct chemical demonstrations carefully and safely so that injuries such as those described in the incidents above do not occur.
