You already know a bit about the kinds of questions on the GRE. Subsequent sections of this book will discuss these questions in detail and offer study tips and strategies for answering them correctly. Answers to the other questions come from the official GRE Registration Bulletin and from the testing centers listed in the Bulletin. Seek out that information right away—you will need it as you set up your study plan.

Standard Journal, appearing semimonthly and containing original articles, short notes, and letters to the editor. With 500 papers per year such a journal could take care of about 50% of all articles and would represent a considerable concentration of information. Right now two magazines exist that are exclusively devoted to papers on basic science in the polymer field the Journal of Polymer Science and Makromoleku-lare Chemie. Together they have about 1600 pages per year and contain about 18% of all articles written in the field.

The pubhc deserves to know what works and what does not, and the degree of the in-between successes, as obtained from a fully independent and impartial appraisal. The public needs this information right now, this very day, as do the practicing medical doctors, Uterally in the trenches, who require the imprimatur of sanctification. Whether or not promising alternative treatments can infiltrate the body r ains speculative, however there arise the usual problems of egos, power, and money. If medical orthodoxy comes up with a solution first, it is by definition okay, but not so for an outsider. The question is complicated by the necessity of clinical trials and by factors like who will be the patients, who will administer and conduct the trials, and judge the results. 

Next, develop your lead (pronounced leed ), the opening sentence(s) or paragraph. Often, the safest lead includes the most important information right up front the five-W lead, the who, what, where, when, and why of the story. It also is called a summary lead because it summarizes the most important points of a story. 

Figure 6.11 provides an overview of the information rights given to the employees according to the chemical agents directive 98/24/EC in combination with the Occupational safety and health framework directive 89/391/EEC.
