Only those oxides for which CVD information has been reported in the literature and which are of some industrial importance are reviewed here. In this chapter, each of these oxides is listed alphabetically with its basic properties, its maj or CVD reactions and processes, and its present and potential applications. A more extensive review of applications is given in Chs. 13 to 19.

Even isolated mono- and disaccharides are capable of extensive hydrogen bonding, which results in extremely low vapor pressures. Attempts at vaporization of these materials results in decomposition. Volatile derivatives must be prepared and the approaches are similar to those described for amino acids. The most common derivatives are methyl or trimethylsilyl ethers and acetyl or trifluoroacetyl esters. A highly detailed review of applications of GLC to carbohydrates including over 1000 references concerning derivatization and types of columns used has been written by Dutton (69,70).

Block copolymers are widely used industrially. In the solid and rubbery states they are used as thermoplastic elastomers, with applications such as impact modification, compatibilization and pressure-sensitive adhesion. In solution, their surfactant properties are exploited in foams, oil additives, solubilizers, thickeners and dispersion agents to name a few. Particularly useful reviews of applications of block copolymers in the solid state are contained in the two books edited by Goodman (1982,1985) and the review article by Riess etal. (1985). The applications of block copolymers in solution have been summarized by Schmolka (1991) and Nace (1996). This book is concerned with the physics underlying the practical applications of block copolymers. Both structural and dynamical properties are considered for melts, solids, dilute solutions and concentrated solutions. The book is organized such that each of these states is considered in a separate chapter.

Wires and cables that are utilized in enclosed spaces are usually required to have fire safety characteristics as described in various codes and standards. The codes and standards governing fire safety of wires and cables are highly complex and diverse, both by application and by geography, and play a critical role in determining selection and formulation of insulation and jacketing materials. Thus, careful review of applicable standards is essential prior to beginning formulation or product development. 

Many other important application areas of chemometrics have been the subject of reviews and are too numerous to list here. A sampling of reviews in this category illustrates the breadth and diversity of chemometrics application areas. A review of applications in smart sensors [54] describes how chemometrics is an important enabling technology for the development of smart and reliable sensor systems. A review of environmental forensics [55] describes how numerical methods are critical in the process of identifying the chemical fingerprints of complex contaminant sources in environmental systems. Often, multiple sources are present at different geographic sites. By use of appropriate chemometric methods, these mixtures of different sources can be mathematically resolved to identify them and map their temporal and spatial distributions.
