As discussed in Section 4.2 type II systems (Bliimel and Esser (1995)) show exponential sensitivity in the quantum subsystem. This allows the possibility of investigating the characteristics of true quantum chaos (type III quantum chaos) using the quantum subsystems of type II systems as a model. Apart from these new possibilities for fundamental research, type II systems have already found an important application. The mixed classical/quantum description, the basis of type II chaos, is a natural starting point for the investigation of the physics of dimers. In these systems chaos may result when electronic and vibronic degrees of freedom are coupled (Hennig and Esser (1992), Esser and Schanz (1995)). 

At Air Products we do work at national laboratories. We also work with other companies, both large companies, in the case of Chemical Industry Fnvironmental Technology Projects—a limited liability company that we formed with DuPont, Akzo Nobel—and with a lot of Small Business Innovation Research-type companies that bring a lot to the table from a feasibility standpoint in terms of new ideas. But in the remainder of this paper, I focus on the industry-university relationships and partnerships.

Figure 26-11b shows an analogous plot of experimental data obtained with a high-quality research-type ultraviolet/visible spectrophotometer. In general, neutron activation analysis is expensive when compared to other techniques. I should point out that these research type samples are generally provided by the manufacturers as a courtesy to the scientific community as the quantities involved have no commercial significance and special requests such as leaving out biocides, etc. almost always cost the manufacturer money.
