Lastly, every research project presents a unique combination of parameters (target, assay methodology, hit rate, throughput limit, and so forth) and project team requirements for interesting actives (physiochemical properties, novelty, and so forth). This suggests that an optimal selection scheme should be easily tailored to meet these unique needs, which is certainly not true of a simple Top X approach. 

The third research project presented by Rohlfing looked at the intrinsic motions of proteins as they influence catalysis and enzymes. Characterizing the intrinsic motions of enzymes is necessary to fully understand how they work as catalysts. As powerful as structure-function relationships are, the motion of these proteins is intimately connected with their catalytic activity and cannot be viewed as static structures. This realization, asserted Rohlfing, could revolutionize and accelerate approaches to biocatalyst design or directed evolution, and could alter understanding of the relations between protein structure and catalytic function. 

While the research projects presented here combine to demonstrate Algorithmic and Register-Transfer Level Synthesis, they are far from the final solution. Rather they each have served to demonstrate basic concepts and approaches to the steps in synthesis, and together have shown two methods of integrating the steps into a synthesis system. In this Chapter, we make observations based on the results of the synthesis programs presented in the previous chapters and suggest future work in the area. 

San Diego Gas Electric s system was originally installed as a research project. The intent of the research project was to test the hardware in this application, test the feasibility of operating such a system remotely with no local operators, and to prove the economics. Similar systems had been installed within process plants where operators were present to start and stop the system and monitor its operation. However, this was the first system installed on a natural gas transmission system with completely remote operation. 

Recently, a similar European LCA research project was launched, which is due for completion in mid-1995. In order to have a technically sound and comprehensive LCA inventory database, the LCA study includes a broad number of detergent surfactants. Companies involved which form the present LCA... 

A similar overview of German activities in 1998 is provided in [65]. The German working party on micro-reaction technology is presented, a federal funding program is introduced, and three top-priority research projects are presented. They show the activities at the edge of acceptance by industry. 

Data from several laboratories within the Interregional Research Project No. 4 (IR-4) in the USA have been evaluated for determining the values of MDL and MQL. These data have been presented in Table 1. The two-step procedure described in the EPA guideline was used to calculate the values of MDL and MQL. For the first step, the slope, intercept and RMSE values for the first three calibration curves of each study were separately calculated, then the IDL and IQL values calculated and the value of LQQ estimated for the method. These values were compared with the actual values of LLMV. The standard deviation of the spike recoveries at the LLMV (xllmv) was used to calculate the MDL and MQL. The values of LLMV were separately determined by the laboratory not using any of the methods described in this article. 

The presented project was not able to deliver reliable data for the validation of the preliminary simulation results or the experimental results in the laboratory. In 2002 another research project has been started to investigate the cold storage... 

These attempted definitions are extremely useful, since they force biogenesis researchers to define their own standpoints. They make it possible to develop new working hypotheses for future research projects. According to Luisi, Once you have the intellectual clarification in front of you, you have the challenge to realize it in the laboratory. However, the definitions presented above are not good enough for all the scientists working in this area.

And, of course, most of these packages—especially the complex semantics ones—are virtual at present. But some research projects have indeed built up the packages of primitives. (The example given here comes from [Muial91].)... 

As concluding remarks about these techniques, their increasing interest and the advantages of their combination with other techniques, we may mention, as an example, that within the European research project COST 535, concerning the Thermodynamics of Alloyed Aluminides , a meeting (Diisseldorf, December 2004) was dedicated to The Diffusion Couple Technique , presenting the principles of the method and the results obtained in the examination of several alloy systems. Zhao (2004) has developed an efficient variant of the diffusion couple technique (the diffusion multiple approach ). 

Another research project at Colorado State University (FEDRIP 1994) will study the microbial degradation kinetics of pollutant mixtures, which will include chloroform. One aspect of this research will focus on both the degradation of chloroform as well as its inhibitory effects when present above certain threshold concentrations. 

Data from GEOSECS, TTO, BATS, and HOTS and other major oceanographic research projects, such as the WOCE (World Ocean Circulation Experiment) are available online. The GEOSECS, TTO, and WOCE datasets are part of the Java Ocean Atlas, which provides a graphic exploration environment for generating vertical profiles, cross-sections, and property-property plots. Many of the data presented in this text were obtained from this source. 

The data presented here constitute part of the results attained in the development of a research project funded by the European Community (EC) and performed in cooperation with three independent European companies [6]. Hybrid polymeric materials based on intimate blends of human serum albumin (HSA), alkyl hemiesters of alternating copolymers of maleic anhydride (MAn), and vinyl ethers of monomethoxyoligoethylene glycols (PEGVE) were selected as biocompatible matrices for the formulation of the nanoparticles. 

A proposal for the comprehensive study of chemical processes in a variety of important condensed-phase systems using modern theoretical methodology has been presented. The primary goals of the research are to provide microscopic information on the mechanisms and structural and dynamical properties of the chemical systems proposed for investigation, to test the applicability of modern ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) by comparison with experiment, and to develop and apply novel ab initio MD techniques in simulating complex chemical systems. The proposed research will contribute to the forefront of modern theoretical chemistry and address a number of important technological issues. The PI has carefully attempted to demonstrate his knowledge, ability, and resources to carry out the proposed research projects. 

A major step towards rational use of medicines was taken in 1977, when WHO established the 1st Model List of Essential Medicines to assist countries in formulating their own national lists. In 1985, the present definition of rational use was agreed at an international conference in Kenya. In 1989, the International Network for the Rational Use of Drugs (INRUD) was formed to conduct multi-disciplinary intervention research projects to promote more rational use of medicines (e-mail inrud msh.org, web site http //www.msh.org/inrud). Following this. 

The Biocat II technology is an improvement of the Biocat process (U.S. Patent 5,076,927), which treats acid mine drainage and heap leach effluents. The improvements were made under a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, a component of the U.S. Department of Defense (D10362Y, p. 4). If adequate concentrations of sulfuric acid are not present, additional acid may be required to operate the process. 

This paper presents two aspects of the research project, namely the geophysical and the minera-logical evolution of the geothermal system as a direct consequence of fluid injection. It is a geological, mineralogical, petrophysical, and geochemical study of water-rock interactions at temperatures of up to, and higher than, 200 °C... 

A version of these team roles, modified by Boddy and Buchanan (1992) to fit with the experience of the project managers they researched is presented in Box 7.8. Expect, as project leader, to fulfil all of these roles at some time or other. They are all competences that can be learned and practised. Even if you have members of the team with these skills, you still need to take responsibility for ensuring that each of them is attended to. 

These types of analyses based as they are on perturbation theory arguments are at present most suitable for seeking out generalizations. The slowness of ab initio calculations and the difficulty of interpreting physically the results of SCF-Aa-SW calculations makes them less suitable for this type of research project.
