An independent agency of the U.S. government whose mission is to promote the progress of science to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare and to secure the national defense. It is a major source of research grants and funding in the sciences. [Pg.260]

We acknowledge funding by NSF grant AST-0307851, NASA/JPL contract 1228235, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Robert J. Huskey Travel fellowship, AAS International Travel Grant, and the F.H. Levinson Fund of the Peninsula Community Foundation. [Pg.130]

This work was supported by the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF) and funded by Korea government (MOST) (grant number 36379-1). [Pg.331]

This work was partially supported by Mr. Witt (Rheinmetall DeTee AG, Germany), Mr. Emmert (Standortverwaltung Hammelburg, Germany), and funded by BMBF under grant Nr. 02 WU 0101, 02 WU 0102). [Pg.57]

After four failed NIH grants and without funds, our group dwindled to only my oldest son William, who was in high school and volunteered to work for the summer. Serendipity and an unexpected ally saved the day. The ally was the goods delivery person... [Pg.463]

Within the past few years, the rate of our understanding of how air pollution oxidants interect with biological systems has accelerated dramatically. This is the result partially of a reasonable level of federal grants and contract funds and partially of cooperative support by local and state agencies of research into specific pollution problems. Research supported by these agencies not only has helped establish an air pollution control policy, it has also helped develop a better scientific understanding of the biological effects of air pollution on man and plants. [Pg.157]

The work described was supported by Grant 86 NR 0063 from the Bundesministerium fiir Ernahrung, Landwirtschaft und Forsten, Grant PBE 18938 A from the Bundesministerium fur Forschung und Technolo-gie, and funds from G. A. Pfleiderer, Neumarkt/Opf. [Pg.372]

Governments in the industrialized world are quick to respond to pressure from pharmaceutical corporations aimed at putting public funds to work in the service of private wealth. Some of the instruments deployed toward this end include the patent system, tax credits, R D grants, and subsidies from national healthcare systems. This is not to argue that such incentives are bad per se rather, they must be called into question when they are offered without regard to their ultimate social utility. [Pg.120]

This research was supported in part by Research Grants CHE-8513247 and CHE-8712457 from the National Science Foundation, and funds from the Dow Corning Corporation. The Nicolet 60SX FTIR spectrometer was purchased in part by Grant CHE-8317079 from the National Science Foundation. [Pg.158]

I am indebted to the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research for support of the research on polyphosphine synthesis. In addition the work on the synthesis and catalytic activity of polyphosphines containing neomenthyl terminal groups was part of an United States-Hungarian cooperative science project in collaboration with L. Marko of the Veszprem University of Chemical Engineering and funded jointly by the U.S. National Science Foundation (Grant INT-76-20080) and the Hungarian Institute for Cultural Relations. In connection with these projects I acknowledge the skillful experimental collaboration of Pramesh Kapoor, John Cloyd, William Masler, Jozsef Bakos, and Carl Hoff. [Pg.320]

This chapter was supported by NIH grant no. S06GM53933 and funds from the California Agricultural Research Initiative. [Pg.165]

This work was funded by an ONR-YIP Award (N00014-00-1-0664) and by ARO (DAAD19-01-1 -0346). PSC gratefully acknowledges the receipt of a Beckman Young Investigator Award, a Nontenured Faculty Award from 3M Corporation, an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, an ACS PRF grant, and a Research Innovation Award from Research Corporation. [Pg.113]
