Laser-based profilometry systems have also been applied for nondestructive testing and measurement of both smooth-bore and rifled gun tubes. Working through Small Business Innovation Research program, the U.S. Army has developed laser-based profilometry systems for the inspection of the 120mm cannon used on the MI-Al Abrams main battle tank. Systems have also been built to measure the erosion of 25 mm and 155 mm rifled gun tubes.

Feedstock Development. Most of the research in process in the United States in the early 1990s on the selection of suitable biomass species for energy appHcations is limited to laboratory studies and small-scale test plots. Many of the research programs on feedstock development were started in the 1970s or early 1980s. 

The design or substantial modification of a new plant or process, its subsequent constmction, and start-up represent a tremendous investment of time and money. The rewards are great if a significant improvement is realized the risks are also great if a costiy commercial plant fails to produce as expected. To reduce the degree of risk, lengthy and expensive research programs are often undertaken.

Both friction and wear measurements have been used to study boundary lubrication of fuel because sticking fuel controls and pump failures are primary field problems in gas turbine operation. An extensive research program of the Coordinating Research Council has produced a baH-on-cylinder lubricity test (BOCLE), standardized as ASTM D5001, which is used to qualify additives, to investigate fuels, and to assist pump manufacturers (21).

The U.S. Department of Energy has funded a research program to develop the Hquid-phase methanol process (LPMEOH) (33). This process utilizes a catalyst such as copper—zinc oxide suspended in a hydrocarbon oil. The Hquid phase is used as a heat-transfer medium and allows the reaction to be conducted at higher conversions than conventional reactor designs. In addition, the use of the LPMEOH process allows the use of a coal-derived, CO-rich synthesis gas. Typical reactor conditions for this process are 3.5—6.3 MPa (35—60 atm) and 473—563 K (see Methanol).
