This work is a part of a European research program initiated at the Soultz-sous-Forets site (France) in 1987 which aims to develop a pilot plant for extracting heat accumulated in the deep fractured granitic basement. Heat extraction must be carried out by forced circulating of a fluid between three wells drilled at S km depth.

This research was supported by a Marie Curie fellowship of the European Community program Improving Human Research Potential and the Socio-Economic Knowledge Base under contract number HPMF-CT-2001-01453 and by a NATO Science for Peace grant number 973849. 

Low-cost material programs include the European Union s 54 million sixth framework research program on nanotechnologies and nanosciences, knowledge-based multifunctional materials, new production processes and devices. In partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA), the 5-year project seeks to find catalysts less expensive than platinum, which is used widely in fuel cells. As an alternative to platinum, nickel, cobalt and copper alloys are a possible solution.

Danish research communities are well represented in European research and demonstration projects in the area of fuel cells. In the period 1999-2002, 43 projects were supported by the EU s Fifth Framework program on Energy Environment and Sustainable Development (EESP). Overall, Danish partners have participated in EU-sponsored 13 fuel cell projects (For more information see the Nordic programmes).

The International Council of Chemical Associations—made up of the American Chemistry Council, the European Chemical Industry Council, and the Japan Chemical Industry Association—is the global coordinator of the Long-Range Research Initiative (LRI), a research program that funds research in the effects of chemicals on human health and the environment (LRI 2001). 

It is with pleasure that the authors acknowledge the support of the National University of Singapore s Eastern European Research Scientist and Student Program to allow I. H. to visit Singapore where this chapter was commenced and largely written. Research in xanthate chemistry conducted in our laboratories were funded by the Australian Research Council, National University of Singapore and by the National Council of Academic Research, Bucharest, Romania. 

In order to link these scattered activities and to create an international network of historians of chemistry, some time ago the European Science Foundation in Strasbourg initiated a five year research program on The Evolution of Chemistry, 1789-1939 , which has yielded a series of conferences and a fair number of books. When this program came to an end in 1997, it was felt that this network should be used - in a sort of follow-up project - to focus interest in, and to stimulate research on, the history of twentieth-century chemistry.
