Monitoring and control of the production process will be performed by a combination of instrumentation and control equipment plus manual involvement. The level of sophistication of the systems can vary considerably. For example, monitoring well performance can be done in a simple fashion by sending a man to write down and report the tubing head pressures of producing wells on a daily basis, or at the other extreme by using computer assisted operations (CAO) which uses a remote computer-based system to control production on a well by well basis with no physical presence at the wellhead. 

Availability of a representative set of data examples. Such a set may significantly simplify construction of any automatic interpretation system. The example data is usually obtained from calibration pieces, however, they usually represent only the most common defects and are usually expensive to manufacture. Recently more and more data is stored as digital inspection records, unfortunately the stored data is rarely fully classified, as this would increase the cost of inspection (usually only the serious defects are given full description in the reports). 

Rule-based systems have the advantage that they usually report when they are incapable of recognising something. However, any disturbances in the inspection not foreseen during rule-hase construction will significantly lower the recognition ratio.

This paper reports experiences and developments gained on the testing-system NFUS2300 [Ref. 6]. It will show the advanced state of the used technique and present a successful in-situ testing.

The software US-SCAN 3.0 (IBT GmbH, Ober-Ramstadt, Germany) provides all functions of a portable flaw detector and a powerful ultrasonic imaging in A-, B-, C- and D-scans. Not only motor driven scanners can he used, but also manual scanning systems with encoders. Further documentation and test reports can be carried out with Windows software. 

The 3D inspection system has a number of measuring and report utilities that enables the user to easily find, analyse and report possible indications in the test object. As an example, a moveable 2D projection view plane can be moved along e.g, the welding geometry dynamically updating the content of the 2D projection view window. Indications can be measured using any referenee co-ordinate system and the results and screen dumps can automatically be dumped in report files suited for later import into a word processing application. 

This report presents the results of investigations aimed at the creation of the surface wave transducer for the automated control. The basic attention is drawn to the analysis of the position of the front meniscus of the contact liquid when the surface waves excite through the slot gap and to the development of system for acoustic contact creation.

As has been noted, much of the interest in hlms of proteins, steroids, lipids, and so on, has a biological background. While studies at the air-water interface have been instructive, the natural systems approximate more closely to a water-oil interface. A fair amount of work has therefore been reported for such interfaces in spite of the greater experimental difhculties. 

Electron Spin Resonance Spectroscopy. Several ESR studies have been reported for adsorption systems [85-90]. ESR signals are strong enough to allow the detection of quite small amounts of unpaired electrons, and the shape of the signal can, in the case of adsorbed transition metal ions, give an indication of the geometry of the adsorption site. Ref. 91 provides a contemporary example of the use of ESR and of electron spin echo modulation (ESEM) to locate the environment of Cu(II) relative to in a microporous aluminophosphate molecular sieve. 

Almost everyone has a concept of pressure from weather reports of tlie pressure of the atmosphere around us. In this context, high pressure is a sign of good weather while very low pressures occur at the eyes of cyclones and hurricanes. In elementary discussions of mechanics, hydrostatics of fluids and the gas laws, most scientists leam to compute pressures in static systems as force per unit area, often treated as a scalar quantity. They also leam that unbalanced pressures cause fluids to flow. Winds are the flow of the atmosphere from regions of high to low...

A pletliora of different SA systems have been reported in tire literature. Examples include organosilanes on hydroxylated surfaces, alkanetliiols on gold, silver, copper and platinum, dialkyl disulphides on gold, alcohols and amines on platinum and carboxyl acids on aluminium oxide and silver. Some examples and references can be found in [123]. More recently also phosphonic and phosphoric esters on aluminium oxides have been reported [124, 125]. Only a small selection out of tliis number of SA systems can be presented here and properties such as kinetics, tliennal, chemical and mechanical stability are briefly presented for alkanetliiols on gold as an example. 

GaAs has been coated with thiols with a view to modifying devices [123]. For these films, S-As bonds are presumed to be present. An ordering of the chains for = 18 has been reported. However, this system has generally been much less investigated than those involving metal substrates. 

A combination of equation (C2.6.13), equation (C2.6.14), equation (C2.6.15), equation (C2.6.16), equation (C2.6.17), equation (C2.6.18) and equation (C2.6.19) tlien allows us to estimate how low the electrolyte concentration needs to be to provide kinetic stability for a desired lengtli of time. This tlieory successfully accounts for a number of observations on slowly aggregating systems, but two discrepancies are found (see, for instance, [33]). First, tire observed dependence of stability ratio on salt concentration tends to be much weaker tlian predicted. Second, tire variation of tire stability ratio witli particle size is not reproduced experimentally. For the Berry phase, we shall quote a definition given in [164] ""The phase that can be acquired by a state moving adiabatically (slowly) around a closed path in the parameter space of the system. There is a further, somewhat more general phase, that appears in any cyclic motion, not necessarily slow in the Hilbert space, which is the Aharonov-Anandan phase [10]. Other developments and applications are abundant. An interim summai was published in 1990 [78]. A further, more up-to-date summary, especially on progress in experimental developments, is much needed.
