Pressure-relief Devices. Spring-loaded pressure-relief valves and rupture disks of thin sheet material are available from manufacturers (see " Chemical Engineering Catalog ). When using pressure-relief disks, a strictly noncorrosive material must be specified because of the requirement of maintaining strength in very small thickness. [Pg.354]

Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) A relief valve is a spring-loaded valve actuated by static pressure upstream of the valve. The valve opens normally in proportion to the pressure increase over opening pressure. A relief valve is normally used with incompressible fluids. [Pg.164]

The pressure relief device used most often in refinery and chemical plant equipment is the spring-loaded, top-guided, high-lift, nozzle-type safety relief valve, which is illustrated in Figure 2. The spring is usually external and enclosed by a bonnet for weather protection, and the bonnet chamber is vented through an internal passage to the valve outlet. [Pg.155]

The soft-seated spring-loaded pilot valve is so constructed as to have a long built-in blowdown. For a flowing type pilot, at the point where the pilot supply line feeds the system pressure to the pilot relief valve, it passes through a variable orifice, which is also the main valve blowdown adjustment. When the pilot opens, the flow through the supply line causes an immediate pressure drop across the orifice. By adjusting the size of the orifice and thus the amount of pressure drop across it, one can obtain any desired system blowdown (5 to 7% is typical). [Pg.163]

Balanced relief valves are spring-loaded valves that contain a bellows arrangement to keep back-pressure from affecting the set point. Figure 13-4 shows a cross section of a balanced relief valve, and Figure 13-5 is a schematic that shows how the valve operates. The bonnet is vented to atmosphere and a bellows is installed so that the back-pressure acts both downward and upward on the same area of the disc. Users are warned that an ordinary spring loaded safety relief valve will not open at its set pressure if back pressure builds up in the space between the valve and rupture disk.
