Quantities of hazardous wastes produced each year are not known with certainty and depend on the definitions used for such materials. In the United States, there are around 17,000 RCRA-regulated sites that generate approximately 30 million tons of wastes. However, most of this material is water, with only a few million tons consisting of solids. Some high-water-content wastes are generated directly by processes that require large quantities of water in waste treatment, and other aqueous wastes are produced by mixing hazardous wastes with wastewater. 

Enzymes that display substrate cooperativity are often important in controlling the overall rate of metabolic pathways (section 10.2.1). Their rate of reaction is extremely sensitive to the concentration of substrate. Furthermore, this sensitivity can readily be modified by a variety of compounds that bind to specific regulator sites on the enzyme and affect its conformation, so affecting the conformation of all of the active sites of the multi-subunit complex, and either activating the enzyme at low concentrations of substrate by decreasing cooperativity or inhibiting it by increasing cooperativity. 

The experimenter must bear in mind these phenomena. There are, in cells, physiological effectors which displace the concentration zone at which the activity of certain enzymes is controlled by their substrates. These effectors act by occupying a distinct regulation site on the active site (sometimes localized on a protomer different from that which carries the active site). 

Additionally, individuals employed by railroad companies or whose jobs are rail-related may be considered miners if the tasks are performed at an MSHA-regulated site.
