In the absence of cost-effective sortation/reclamation technologies, pyrolytic processes are potentially applicable to commingled streams containing mostly hydrocarbon polymers. Therefore, in principle, pyrolytic processes may be applicable to Municipal Solid Waste tailings , automotive shredder residue fluff, and perhaps mixed textiles. However, the limitations imposed by PVC contamination and other impurities will significantly limit the applicability of a specific process or require an additional pretreatment step. 

Much of the technology used in the reclamation of metals from metal-bearing wastes was developed by the mining iadustries. The primary means of recycling metal from metal and alloyed scrap is via pyrometaHurgy (see Metallurgy).

The center initially concentrated on reclamation and reuse and developed a technology for the reclamation of postconsumer waste plastics. After only two years, CPRR published nearly 25 reports based on its research and held conferences to provide for transferring the technology. "We want to disseminate the information as widely and in as timely a fashion as we can to help develop the infrastructure that will cause plastics to be included in the recycling stream, says Morrow. 

Much of the resin reclamation and reprocessing technology comes from overseas, as the Europeans and Japanese have been involved in recycling for a longer period of time. There are other reclamation processes for different resins, which have been developed by or licensed to private companies, but because these are usually proprietary the details of their operations are not known.

The Advanced Environmental Services, Inc. (AESI), soil reclamation facility, American SoU Processing, in Marion, Iowa, includes on-site soil storage capacity and soU processing equipment. The Cedarapids soU remediation system (manufactured by Ratheon Company) used by AESI to treat contaminated soils by low-temperature thermal desorption is similar to that used by another vendor. Bearehaven Reclamation, Inc. (Bearehaven), in situ bioremediation is a proprietary technology for the treatment of organic contaminants. According to the vendor, the process can readily remediate trichloroethylene (TCE), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), diesel fuel, and other more complex organic compounds in soil, water, sludge, and landfills. 

The MRU technology is not applicable to heavy-metal-contaminated soils nor to radioactive waste contamination. The one exception to heavy-metals remediation is mercury. The vaporization temperature for mercury is well within the operating range of the MRU, and because of closed chamber construction, it is ideally suited for the removal and reclamation of mercury from contaminated soil.

The current state of the case study illustrated (Table 2) shows that technologies for reclamation (condensation, distillation, metal reclamation) or recycling (electrolyte production) are for the most part available for process emissions. Furthermore, chemicals with poor efficiency are currently used in the area of electroplating.
