Textiles mixed

Polonium can be mixed or alloyed with beryllium to provide a source of neutrons. The element has been used in devices for eliminating static charges in textile mills, etc. however, beta sources are both more commonly used and less dangerous. It is also used on brushes for removing dust from photographic films. The polonium for these is carefully sealed and controlled, minimizing hazards to the user. [Pg.149]

In this case, the components are mixed, the pH adjusted to about 6.0 with sodium hydroxide, and the solution appHed to the textile via a pad-dry-cure treatment. The combination of urea and formaldehyde given off from the THPC further strengthens the polymer and causes a limited amount of cross-linking to the fabric. The Na2HP04 not only acts as a catalyst, but also as an additional buffer for the system. Other weak bases also have been found to be effective. The presence of urea in any flame-retardant finish tends to reduce the amount of formaldehyde released during finishing. [Pg.489]

Small, complex-shaped glass articles such as thread guides for the textile industry and television gun mounts for the electronics industry are made by the multiform process. The dry-milled powder is mixed with an inorganic binder and a fluid vehicle, and then atomi2ed by a spray dryer into small, dried agglomerates of glass powder and binder with good flow characteristics. They are subsequently pressed to the desired shape and fired. [Pg.310]

Copper quinolinolate (oxine copper) is the chelate of divalent copper and 8-hydroxyquinoline and shares most of its market with copper naphthenate, which is a complex copper salt of mixed naphthenic acids. The principal uses are in wood treatments and some military textiles, where the green color is not objectionable. Copper naphthenate has an odor but is cheaper than oxine. Both copper naphthenate and 2inc naphthenate have performed well in environment tests, with exposure to soil above-ground, as well as concrete (33). [Pg.98]

Hard facing of various components in the aircraft gas-turbine engine and in industrial apphcations for textile machinery parts, oil and gas machinery parts, paper-shtting knives, etc, is estimated at 1 x 10 in 1995 with an estimated growth rate of 5% annually. The mix is approximately 45% aerospace apphcations, 55% industrial apphcations. Additionally, repair coatings for gas-turbine blades and vanes is estimated at 500 x 10 . These coatings are primarily deposited by plasma spray, arc-wire, HVOF, and detonation gun techniques. [Pg.51]

The 3M Company manufactures a continuous polycrystalline alurnina—sihca—boria fiber (Nextel) by a sol process (17). Aluminum acetate is dissolved in water and mixed with an aqueous dispersion of colloidal sihca and dimethylform amide. This mixture is concentrated in a Rotavapor flask and centrifuged. The viscous mixture is then extmded through spinnerettes at 100 kPa (1 atm) the filaments are collected on a conveyor and heat-treated at 870°C to convert them to metallic oxides. Further heating at 1000°C produces the 10-p.m diameter aluminum borosihcate fibers, which are suitable for fabrication into textiles for use at temperatures up to 1427°C. [Pg.56]

The largest use of calcium hypochlorite is for water treatment. It is also used for I I and household disinfectants, cleaners, and mildewcides. Most of the household uses have been limited to in-tank toilet bowl cleaners. In areas where chlorine cannot be shipped or is otherwise unavailable, calcium hypochlorite is used to bleach textiles in commercial laundries and textile mills. It is usually first converted to sodium hypochlorite by mixing it with an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate and removing the precipitated calcium carbonate. Or, it can be dissolved in the presence of sufficient sodium tripolyphosphate to prevent the precipitation of calcium salts. However, calcium hypochlorite is not usually used to bleach laundry and textiles because of problems with insoluble inorganic calcium salts and precipitation of soaps and anionic detergents as their calcium salts. [Pg.143]

In continuous dyeing there are many variables and the rapidity of the dyeing process requites many adjustments during the period in which several thousand meters of textile are dyed. Instmmental science has continued to advance rapidly so that continuous ranges are available which are entirely computer-controUed except for the makeup of the dye mix. These units feature computer control and closed-cincuit television and continuous color measurement techniques. [Pg.371]

Much of the CI2O manufactured industrially is used to make hypochlorites, particularly Ca(OCl)2, and it is an effective bleach for wood-pulp and textiles. CI2O is also used to prepare chloroisocyanurates (p. 324) and chlorinated solvents (via mixed chain reactions in which Cl and OCl are the chain-propagating species). Its reactions with inorganic reagents are summarized in the scheme opposite. [Pg.846]

The Vinyloop process was developed by Solvay as a response to a challenge from one of its customers, Ferrari Textiles Techniques (France), who produces architectural tarpaulin and canvas in PVC/polyester compound. This is a rather difficult formulation for recycling, since the PVC is mixed with a matrix. At the same time, Ferrari felt it was important that their material would be recyclable. The first Vinyloop installation is now operational. It is a form of mechanical rather than feedstock or chemical recycling, since the PVC matrix is not changed in the process. [Pg.19]
