Illustrative Case Studies

PR chemicals are derived from petroleum and natural gas and other basic feedstocks, whereas the SR chemicals are those needed as additives or in small quantities. 

The chemicals classified as I are those produced and consumed in the petrochemical network. Finally, the PF and SF chemicals are the selected final products by selected processes and the associated byproducts in the network, respectively. 

The modeling system GAMS (Brooke et al., 1996) is used for setting up the optimization models. The computational tests were carried out on a Pentium M 

The potential function of each chemical is also indicated PR = primary rawmaterial, SR = secondary raw material, I = intermediate, PF = primary final product, SF = secondary final product. 

The model in this form is moderate in size and the solution indicated the selection of 22 processes out of the 81 processes proposed. The selected processes and their respective capacities are shown in Table 4.2. This case study represents an ideal situation where all parameters are known with certainty.

More subtle effects of preservatives on injectable formulations are possible. Formulation of insulin is an illustrative case study. Insulin is usually formulated as a multiple-dose vial, since individual dosage varies among patients. Preservation of zinc insulin with phenol causes physical instability of the suspension, whereas methyl-paraben does not. However, the presence of phenol is required for obtaining protamine insulin crystals [9]. 

The material on catalysis and heterogeneous reactions in Chapters 6, 1%, and 13 is a useful framework for an intermediate level graduate course in catalysis and chemical reactor design. In the latter course emphasis is placed on developing the student s ability to analyze critically actual kinetic data obtained from the literature in order to acquaint him with many of the traps into which the unwary may fall. Some of the problems in Chapter 12 and the illustrative case studies in Chapter 1 3 have evolved from this course. 

In the following, the screening power and the scientific potential applying HIE Stage n technologies in gas-phase oxidation are demonstrated for two illustrative case studies (1) the epoxidation of 1,3-butadiene with Ag-based catalysts and (2) dynamic experiments for automotive applications (DcNOJ. 

In order to understand the effect of each term on the overall objective function of the system, different values of 0i and 02 are evaluated to construct the efficient frontier of expected cost versus risk measured by standard deviation. This will be demonstrated in the illustrative case studies. 

Highlight observations arising from (2) and (3) by means of an illustrative case study. 

Under the ACPS Manufacturing Subcommittee a working group will be formed to identify specific steps needed to move towards the desired state. The group will also develop illustrative case studies to support the ICH Q8 document and CPG 7132c.08. ICH Q8 and illustrative examples should then be a basis to develop the draft comparability guidance to facilitate continuous improvements.
