Efforts in recent years have been directed toward the use of recycled material in reclamation. Sewage sludge has been used to add organic material to substitute top soil (Bhumbla, 1992 Logan, 1992). The bacterial content of sewerage sludge is usually not a problem, provided that grazing and human exposure at the site is delayed for several weeks or months after treatment. 

When clay is pumped into the reclamation area after hydrauhc dredging, its shear strength is very difficult to predict. The development of the strength increase can take a long time unless special measures are taken for dewatering and/or soil improvement (reference is made to Chapter 7 and section 10.2). As a rule of thumb the water content of the sedimented clay material can be expected to be 1.5 to 2 times the hquid limit of the clay after some weeks (Skempton, 1970 Buchan and Smith, 1990 Tsuchida and Gomyo, 1995).
