Because of these great improvements, all magnetic nuclei can now be used in n.m.r. analysis of fluorinated monosaccharides," including H, C, N, and F. Table I gives the relevant, spectroscopic data for these nuclei. 

The crude product exhibits n.m.r. singlets CCI4 solution) at 7.29(5H), 5.41(2H), and 4.68 p.p.m.(2H). Both n.m.r. and gas chromatographic analyses indicate a purity of greater than 90% with the major, and in most cases only, impurity being dibenzylformal. Gas chromatographic analysis was obtained at 155° with a 2 m. X 0.7 cm. column packed with silicone fluid, No. 710, suspended on 60-80 mesh firebrick. The checkers have found benzyl chloride to be the main contaminant of the un-distilled product (n.m.r. analysis). 

The submitters found that analysis of the undistilled aldehyde by gas chromatography indicated a purity of 98.6%. The analysis was conducted on a column packed with 16% LS-40 on Chromosorb P/AW at 100°. N.m.r. analysis indicated an isotopic purity of 97.9% (trace of impurity at 9.60 p.p.m. due to CHO, carbon tetrachloride solution, internal tetra-methylsilane as reference). If the crude aldimine is hydrolyzed, the aldehyde is obtained in 96% overall yield however, the purity is only 94% by gas chromatography analysis. The checkers found no detectable impurity by gas chromatography in the distilled aldehyde, and the n.m.r. spectrum indicated very high isotopic purity. 

According to n.m.r. analysis the use of boron trifluoride diethyl etherate does not cause any detectable introduction of ethyl groups into the product. 

The second difference is that the correlations between samples are calculated rather than the correlations between elements. In the terminology of Rozett and Peterson ( ), the correlation between elements would be an R analysis while the correlation between samples would be a Q analysis. Thus, the applications of factor analysis discussed above are R analyses. Imbrle and Van Andel ( 6) and Miesch (J 7) have found Q-mode analysis more useful for interpreting geological data. Rozett and Peterson (J ) compared the two methods for mass spectrometric data and concluded that the Q-mode analysis provided more significant informtlon. Thus, a Q-mode analysis on the correlation about the origin matrix for correlations between samples has been made (18,19) for aerosol composition data from Boston and St. Louis.
