Rl accomplishes this task correctiy in a fraction of the time it would take for human technicians. The savings in this case are in terms of the number of orders processed, which ultimately translates to doUars. As a final example, consider Prospector, another classic expert system built in the 1970s (4). This computer program, designed to detect commercially viable ore deposits based on geological data, correctiy identified a molybdenum ore deposit worth about 100 million. [Pg.530]

Phase behavior 1n concentrated aqueous electrolyte systems is of interest for a variety of applications such as separation processes for complex salts, hydrometal 1urgical extraction of metals, interpretation of geological data and development of high energy density batteries. Our interest in developing simple thermodynamic correlations for concentrated salt systems was motivated by the need to interpret the complex solid-liquid equilibria which occur in the extraction of sodium nitrate from complex salt mixtures which occur in Northern Chile (Chilean saltpeter). However, we believe the thermodynamic approach can also be applied to other areas of technological interest. [Pg.718]

CASE 2 - Evaluation of the importance of structural anisotropies (fractures, faults, cataclastic bands) and their persistence (horizontal and vertical) measured at the surface (structural-geological survey) and their mapping (integrated evaluation of geophysical data and structural-geological data)... [Pg.10]

The second difference is that the correlations between samples are calculated rather than the correlations between elements. In the terminology of Rozett and Peterson ( ), the correlation between elements would be an R analysis while the correlation between samples would be a Q analysis. Thus, the applications of factor analysis discussed above are R analyses. Imbrle and Van Andel ( 6) and Miesch (J 7) have found Q-mode analysis more useful for interpreting geological data. Rozett and Peterson (J ) compared the two methods for mass spectrometric data and concluded that the Q-mode analysis provided more significant informtlon. Thus, a Q-mode analysis on the correlation about the origin matrix for correlations between samples has been made (18,19) for aerosol composition data from Boston and St. Louis. [Pg.35]

Geologic data for asteroid 4 Vesta, (a) Spectral map of a part of the surface of Vesta as it rotates, showing the distribution of HED-like lithologies, modified from Binzel et at. (1997). (b) Interpretive geologic cross-section of Vesta, illustrating how HED meteorites might be distributed in the interior,... [Pg.463]

It is neither intended nor implied that the above technique can supplant normal geological data for identifying the major coal horizons. Indeed, much work remains to be done to learn why some Pennsylvania coals yield uniform analyses over great distances and why others, though widespread, can be related only locally through detailed examination of the layers within them. [Pg.84]

Here, the additional term acts like vector current and by making a fit of geologic data, Schrodinger arrived at a finite rest mass. However, he pointed out that this effect might be produced by positive or negative particles revolving around the earth at same distances in the equatorial plane. ... [Pg.605]

Many new geological data have appeared after analyses of the kerns of sea bottom rocks and ice. [Pg.63]

The panned heavy mineral concentrates have not generally been analysed unless follow-up work has been carried out. However, all are inspected at site and observed minerals and contaminants are recorded. The samples are an excellent resource for identifying drainage catchment mineralisation and lithologies as well as anthropogenic contamination (Fig. 4.8). Indeed, all the G-BASE excess samples are stored at the National Geological Data Centre, Keyworth, UK, and are available for further study. The value of excess sample powders in research should not be underestimated. [Pg.89]

The objective of this work, in particular, is to provide comprehensive geographic and geologic data to help understand possible interactions between the occurrence of anomalous amounts of toxic metal concentrations and pathologies in Campania region. The latter is, with Sardinia (De Vivo et al., 1997, 2001, 2006c), the only Italian region covered by a systematic sampling of soils and stream sediments with the distribution of toxic metals. [Pg.388]
