The automotive sector s quality assurance standard QS 9000 (1998) suggests a concurrent high level model, as opposed to the sequential model from BS 7000 (1997). This is shown in Figure 5.7. The automotive industry in particular has embraced the use of concurrent engineering models for product development, and this is reflected in the standards which facilitate their quality assurance programmes. A concurrent industrial model from the automotive sector will be discussed later.

ISO 9000. This standard, titled Quality Management and Quality Assurance Standards Guidelines for Selection and Use, is advisory describing the use of the standards in establishing supplier contracts as well as providing guidance on the use of the other four standards. 

The supplier-user or vendor-vendee relationship, as it pertains to quality, is well described in the American National Standard s ANSI/ASQC Q90-1987 to Q94-1987. The standards are technically equivalent to the ISO 9000 to ISO 9004 series of the international Quality Management and Quality Assurance Standards. The recommended quality system specifies quality policy, organization, authority, personnel, management review, and so on. 

Whereas GMP as well as GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) and GCP (Good Clinical Practice) are mainly acting on the operational or technical level, other quality assurance standards have been established by the International Organization of Standardization (ISO) to assure quality at the organizational level. Inadequate organizations with unclear tasks and responsibilities can severely influence the quality of products and services. 

In general, it is best to store samples that will be analysed within a few days at 4. Those that are to be stored longer should be stored at — 20°, but only thawed once before analysis. For very long-term storage, freeze-drying should be considered, especially for samples that are used for standard solutions or quality assurance standards.

The ISO 9000 Quality Management and Quality Assurance Standards, Guidelines for Selection and Use, provide basic definitions and concepts and explain how to use the rest of the series (9001, 9002, 9003, and 9004). 

The analysis of nitric-perchloric acid digests of feed samples for a local industry presented an early test of the ICAP analysis of organic samples. The results obtained for Association of American Feed Control OflBcials (AAFCO) feed check samples (included as quality assurance standards within the sample suite) are given in Tables V and VI. The ICAP results for iron, copper, zinc, manganese, cobalt, and potassium are all within the uncertainty limits of the certified values. While not within the uncertainty limits, the results for calcium, magnesium, sodium, and phosphorus compare with acceptable agreement for the intended application. 

CLIA 1988 significantly increased the scope of federal laboratory regulation both in terms of the number of laboratories regulated and quality standards.Under CLIA 1988, any facility that examines or tests material derived from the human body for patient care purposes is subject to federal regulation. Furthermore, the law provides for personnel, patient test management, quality control and quality assurance standards, as well as proficiency testing to identify poorly performing laboratories.
