Few books attempt to cover the area of automatic chemistry. Technical papers which relate to automation have most often been presented in analytical journals dealing with the basic subject area, and the details of the automation are less well documented than the chemistry. Aspects of management, education and economics are given scant treatment despite their importance. The Journal oj Automatic Chemistry [8] was launched to fill this void in the literature and experience has shown that there is a wealth of technical experience awaiting publication. In addition, it is vital for the suppliers of automatic instrumentation and computer systems to set up adequate lines of communications with their customers. User groups are a valuable asset so that experiences, good and bad, are shared and any problems resolved. A user who becomes frustrated for lack of support or information will become a source of bad reference. A satisfied user, on the other hand, will provide valuable input which may benefit future users and assist the company in providing instruments that the user needs. 

The aims of the automation group at LGC were very clear and are shown in Table 1.3. Simphcity was considered to be the best approach, with the minimum number of processes being involved. A more complex approach has many more chances of failure. The total systems approach is defined in Chapter 3. Essentially, it sets out to cover all aspects of the analytical process as defined in Fig. 1.2. It provides for the quahty checks at operator, supervisor and managerial levels, and rehable results transferred in a readily digestible format. The Tar and Nicotine Survey described by Stockwell and Copeland [IS] is a good example of the approach. The total process, from the statistical sampHng pattern through to quahty-controlled data, leads in its final format to results tabulated for public information. 

Since the publication of the first edition of Supramolecular Chemistry in 2000 the field has continued to grow at a tremendous pace both in depth of understanding and in the breadth of topics addressed by supramolecular chemists. These developments have been made possible by the creativity and technical skill of the international community and by continuing advances in instrumentation and in the range of techniques available. This tremendous activity has been accompanied by a number of very good books particularly at more advanced levels on various aspects of the field, including a two-volume encyclopaedia that we edited. 

An important aspect of public use of an invention is that it does not require that the invention be in open display to be in public use the only requirement is that the invention is being used in its natural and intended way. 28 As a result, the sale or public use of a chemical mixture such as a paint, coating, or medicine would likely still be a public use even though the components in the mixture are not readily discernable to the public. In a similar vein, sale of a good made by a certain process is a public sale of the process and will toll the 102(b) time clock even though the process used to make the good could not be discerned from the good itself.29...
